You'll need to startup with either Mario 64 or GoldenEye in the cart
slot in order to load the GameShark using the default keycode, and be
able to fix your problem. If you don't have those games, it's possible
some other older carts will work, but I've only tested those two.
Thank you and good luck!
After two days of on and off success with the game shark including using super mario 64 to try to solve the problem, it now rarely even shows an LED of any sort except an occasional dash, small c , H, or an 8. Is there anything else we can do with super mario 64 besides putting it on the game shark and turning it on to fix the problem? Or do we just need a new game shark? Thank you very much for your time.

When a Gameshark is given the code for a game - it will lock up and show '8' until that game cartridge is inserted. Without the relevant cartridge that correspond to the entered code, your gameshark will remain locked up.
If you have a gameshark with a port on the back:
You can hook it up to your computer and reset / remove the troublesome codes. The tutorial and software for this is here. This may only apply to v3.2 or v3.3 though.
One other thing I have stumbled across is that there are two games that will usually allow a locked up Gameshark to start again so you can resolve the problem: Mario 64 or GoldenEye.
I hope that helps.
