There can be many different problems but i will give you the common problems,,, it could be the cd drive its self its components are damaged and you need to replace it with a new one,,,, or the number one cause are the cd drive drivers are corrupted or outdated to check the drivers go into control panel, hardware and sound, device manager and look for your cd driver,, i recommend right clicking the driver and uninstall it and reboot the computer it will reinstall itself and that should fix the problem good luck
why dont you check the the cd rom on another computer and see if it experiences similar problems. If not try updating your bios and your drivers for cd rom. If you experience similar problems on another computer the drive might be failing. Consult the drive supplier and ask for a repair or replacement
I would suggest to uninstall the driver and download the latest driver. Also see whether the LED on the drive is blinking. If it is, then probably a driver reinstall might fix the issue. And if the LED is not blinking and there is no response from the Drive, then probably you would have to get the drive replaced.
Hi there, do not format now. Just try these.
Run the driver disk & install the CD/DVD driver. After finish the setup restart your pc or laptop. Hope that time your CD rom detecting the cds. But make sure, that your rom is working. Because if the cd rom is damaged then after formatting you can't install the operating system. May be your cd rom lens is damaged & that's why he can't read the cds or dvds. I suggest you Visit a service center & check the cd rom only. If you able to view the cd rom driver in side the my computer then, i am sure your vd rom lens is damaged.
Thanks & waiting for your feedback.

Q: What if my Gateway System Recovery CD/DVD is lost, missing or damaged?
A:
For computers shipped after November 1, 2004 and until January
2005, a patch needs to be installed. Download the patch through our FTP
site at ftp://esupport:[email protected]/pub/hardware_support/drivers/apps/medialess/Create_DRV_APPS_CD_Update.exe.
After the installation of this patch, the option to create the drivers
and applications CD is available from the Start menu under Programs.
However the operating system (OS) CD\DVD must be requested by e-mailing customer service.
Note: Replacement of the operating system CD may be at a cost according to your warranty status.
For computers shipped between January 2005 and June 2005,
the option to Create my Drivers-Applications CD(s) is already available
under Programs. The operating system CD\DVD must be requested by e-mailing customer service, and may be at a cost according to your warranty status.
For computers shipped after June 2005, an operating system
CD\DVD is included and the option to Create my Drivers-Applications
CD(s) is in System Recovery. Access the program from the Start menu
under Programs. This backup process through System Recovery allows you
to create the applications and drivers CD\DVD as many times as needed.
If the operating system CD\DVD is lost, missing, or damaged, e-mail customer service to inquire about a replacement. Please note that replacement may be at a cost according to your warranty status.
If all CD\DVD's are needed, e-mail customer service to inquire about a replacement. Please note that replacement may be at a cost according to your warranty status.
Send them an email with model number from tag at the back of the computer and ask for recovery CD.
