Today I went to switch on my Playstation 3 by the power button and it went from 'red' to 'green to 'yellow' to 'red' and it will not power on. Therefore I am unable to play. I am running it through an HDMI cable. Please advise.
When I turn it one i press and hold the stand by button and it goes grren to yellow back to green then red.

This is a hardware failure caused by heat. I have done TONS of research on this problem as I have a unit that is like this too. But I bought mine used. I hear that Sony will fix it or send you a replacement for FREE. I have been told by over 30 people that Sony did it for them. Just be honest and polite to the customer service people. Go to www.playstation.com choose your region, click on playstation 3, then Support (upper right corner) and there should be the contact information.

Well mine happened on the 11th august , phoned Playstation 3 consumer services the next , day took a few details and getting a new one 2mos 14th august , 2 days within the call , fantastic.!

This isn't going to help you (yet) with your problem, but I thought I would at least post what happened to me.
Bought a brand new 40GB PS3, carefully removed from the box, followed all instructions to the letter. Plugged it in, turned on the main power switch at the back, and then pressed the power button on the front. NOTHING! Not one light, not one little noise, NOTHING. You would think they at least would power the thing on before sticking it in the box and sucking up your 500 bucks.
Bought a new sony ps3 40gb. Plugged the unit in, turned the power on. It went from green to red, gave 3 beeping sounds and then shut down. What gives?

Went to turn my PS3 on today and it blinked from red to green to yellow to red. Then it just turned off completely. The red light does not even appear anymore when the system is plugged in.
Can reapplying the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU solve this?
