I have a tomtom one xl , it works fine on my pc but does not want to work without the pc. The moment you disconnect it from the pc and turn it on in the vehicle, it starts up and then basically freeze, It just hangs on the start up page. I have reset the unit as well as restored factory settings but nothing still happens

1) Has the GPS been dropped or gotten wet?
2) Did the TomTom get physically disconnected before issuing the "disconnect device" from the TomTom Home drop down menu? (this can corrupt the software inside the GPS)
3) Try reinstalling TomTom Home from www.tomtom.com in your computer
This is a common error ans is usually caused by the card not being formatted correctly
A card reader/writer on you PC is the best option
If you can plug the card in somewhere other than into the Tom Tom.
Even a card reader attached to the PC vai a USB cable will work
The computer will see the tomtom as a USB drive that can be accessed like a flash drive.
You need to format it either as "FAT or "FAT16" using the reader
In either my computer or windows explorer right click on the card (propably listed as removable drive)
Select FORMAT and use one of the FAT options above.
Plug your tomtom into the pc but don't run the tomtom home software If the tom tom asks if you want to connect to computer say yes
Now Simply copy all of the files on your tomtom to the new card.
Once you finish doing the copy, you should be able to insert the card
If you need to add any maps voices etc then disconnect the tomtom from the pc and start the tomtom home software, then connect the tom tom to the pc.
Many tom toms will accept up o a 4gb card (but not micro versions)
This is TomToms fix, apparently something went wrong with the software, my advice would be to make a back up of the device using the TomTom home software. This issue can come from disconnecting the device while it is attached to the computer and software while it is busy, always make sure you use the eject device in the TomTom home software if you are connected to the PC.
i work as a truck driver on a small fleet of 7 vehicles in the midlands UK
3 of us have Tom Toms, the others have medion, navman or garmin.
ALL the tom tom users have been experiencing GPS problems this week ( june 21 onwards ) whilst the rest of us have seen no change in GPS satelite availability.
In addition, a friend who uses a TOM TOM One XL in another part of the UK has also had same problems.
Its a TOM TOM problem generally it seems, and NOT your particular piece of kit.
You need to reset it, by holding in the reset button for 15 seconds. If there is an SD card or memory card of any kind, take this out first. sometimes you have to use something sharp like a paper clip, and push it into a small reset 'hole' in the back of the unit. then put the memory card back in. then look online for step-by -step instructions, usually from the vendor, on how to update the software, if indeed it is at all necessary. Also, try doing the update on a PC instead, there's a chance it's not supported for Macs. I know this is controversial.. i hate Windows too.. :)
hopefully the reset button will resurrect yr tomtom though. good luck
