I had the same problem with hp psc 1350 all-in-one. Number of the cartridge 56, 57. I tried to get some ideas in the local hp technical support - no help. So I opened the whole think, cleaned the contacts on the cartridge and on the trolley, Then I pressed the smaller tape you could see on the left side ( which is responsible for passing of the data ) to make sure that there is no problems with contact. After this procedure from some reason the amber light stoped flushing.
And one more point if you press the first and second buton on the left side you get no 1 on the display and both amber diode start flushing. Then you can open the door like you would replacing the cartridge and then close them again.
Hope that this would be of some help.

You may be doing everything right except the very last thing.

After replacing the cartridges, your product display will ask to do a cartridge alignment. Press ENTER on the control panel to align the print cartridges.

You must allow your printer to finish this procedure.

Try removing the printer then reinstalling it. If you have a disc. I think they have discontinued driver downloads for HP PCS 1300 and 1400. Do not remove it if you do not have an installation disc.
