The safety device has been activated.

Okay, fair enough. The needle does not appear to be bent. Neither the upper or lower threads are jammed. And not the machine will not sew. Horrible grinding noise and the balance wheel is locked and won't budge an inch. I bought this machine for my Mother's birthday in October. This is only the 3rd time we've used it!

My machine also desplayed the same message. I figured that if it was just thread I would remove it myself. I opened up my machine. It was not thread. There is an arm that operates the needle going up and down. It is made of aluminium and there is a steel shaft that turns inside of it. That is what has froze up on my machine and this is my second machine to do the same thing.

I have a brother LB-6800, I had the same error message and I only used mine four times , the second time I used it the bobbin holder broke, so i replaced it, with that being said, when i got my error message I unpluged it , removed the two screws holding the bottom case ( they are two differnt sizes so dont get them confused with the other) and I shook it while holding it upside down, a little piece of plastic , and I mean just a tiny piece of plastic fell to the floor, I carefully put it back together and no more jam and no more error message. Im back to my sewing again. so it could be something tiny has jammed that metal case that holds the bobbin case, well hope this helps someone.

It is under warantee for 12 months, so I would recommend you phone the dealer to arrange for them to have a look at it.....if you have any samples of sewing, take them too.

Error message "the safety device has been activated. Is the thread tangled? Is the needle bent?" Occurred after needle no 5 broke and fell out. The machine

If the safety has been activated, there is something wrong with the machine that could potentially be dangerous--to the machine or you. You should probably take it to a technician.

Messages about safe device activated & press the needle position button

The noise is because the machine is trying to raise or lower a needle and can't move. Several things to check. Did the needle break and jam in the bottom thread? Is the needle bent or jam? Did the thread jam in the bobbin area? I had a 'knot' of thread build up on the bottom and it hooked itself into the metal clip on the bobbin so that the needle couldn't raise. If thread jams in the bottom carefully cut the threads until you can free the hoop and material. Then check to make sure all pieces of thread and fuzz has been removed in the bobbin case. If it happens again check to see if the bobbin case or the throat plate is scratched or bent. If you are stitching Free Standing Lace on this machine or a piece with over 20,000 stitches I recommend starting with a new full bobbin and a new needle. As you get toward the bottom of the bobbin, thread seems to have a high likelihood of tangling or looping.

How to fix new home machine it model No.731016401. model 360 manufactured by Janome its not sewing cloths. The thread is placed properly but when i try sewing it starts to break the thread. it turns in...

Upper thread breaks
1.needle may be in backwards
Correct needle insertion
Correct needle insertion is mandatory for proper use of sewing machine.
Raise the needle bar to the highest point, then loosen the clamp screw to remove the old needle, place the new needle in the clamp with the flat side to the back of the machine or if using a round needle--the groove in the needle should face away from the shaft.
Push the needle all the way up to the stop or as far as it will go, then tighten the needle clamp screw
2.upper tension may be to tight--try 3 to 5
3.the needle may be bent or damaged--try rolling the needle on a flat surface to see if it's bent or not
4.thread may be hanging up in bobbin case--check area for loose threads or lint
???
Lower thread breaks
The most probable cause of lower thread breaking is improperly wound bobbin
1.always start with a empty bobbin
Never wind one color over the other
2.choose thread that is identical in color & type as the one to be used for upper threading
3.wind the bobbin evenly across & in layers
4.don't wind the bobbin so full that it would be tight & hard to insert into bobbin case
5.bent bobbin--replace
6.lint built up in the bobbin case--frequent cleanings will eliminate this problem, the more often you use the sewing machine the more often it needs to be cleaned
7.thread catching on the bobbin spring or latch on bobbin case, check to see that the bobbin is inserted completely & correctly, & that you are using the right kind of bobbin

also check the thread take up lever to make sure the thread has not come off of it cause that can make the machine jam up also

I have the Janome 6600 P. Beginning a seam the thread knotted and the machine made noise and needle would not move either up or down. I manually moved the needle using the handwheel and cut away the...

Replace the needle.
The tension on the bottom may be too tight(loosen) or the top tension may not be tight enough (tighten). Try to fix with the top tension being tightened first.. Move the hand wheel first for a couple of rounds. If it is still a problem the bottom tension will need to be loosened. Always make sure all of the old threads are cleaned out thoroughly. Now, here is a problem chart to look at if this isn't a fix.

E5: The machine is jammed or the foot controller is defective. A. Replace the foot controller. B. Check for a tight or stuck clutch by the hand wheel. C. The machine may be jammed. Remove the timing belt to locate whether the bind is on the upper shaft or lower shaft. If it is the upper shaft, there may be thread caught in the take-up lever or crank pin. If the lower shaft is binding, check hook clearance, hook backlash. D. If you continue to have the problem, loosen the screws that hold the metal, lower shaft supporter. While the machine is running slow-to-medium speed, tighten the screws. E. Clean the sensor on the DC motor and check if the shield plate on the motor is not loose or hitting the sensor. If either the sensor or shield plate is damaged, replace the motor. F. Check the lower shaft sensor. Make sure the shield plate is going perfectly thru the middle of the sensor. Replace the sensor and/or shield plate if damaged. G. If you still get the error, replace the DC motor or lower shaft sensor (in this order).

check to see if you have your needle in backwards
have you checked your needle to see if it's bent-roll it on a flat surface & see if it rolls good
check to see if the needle is blunt-makes a popping sound when going thru fabric
check to see if the thread is getting caught on the notch of the spool of thread
check to make sure the bobbin is not warped
check to make sure there are no burrs on the bobbin case
check your upper thread tension

The top needle unthreads after just a few stiches. I have a Singer 2950 and am new to sewing.

Are you saying that the thread is breaking?

CAUSES of upper thread breaking

needle is in backwards
improperly threaded
tension to tight
needle bent or blunt
thread to coarse for size of needle
needle too long for machine
burr on needle
tension discs worn so that thread works in grove
neele too fine for size of thread and fabric
lint or dirt around bobbin case holder
irregular sewing speed
AND THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS:
threads not properly pulled back under pressure foot when starting to sew
This means, Have enough of the upper and lower thread pulled to the back and hold for the first 2-3 stiches,

Do this every time and it will become second nature and you will do it automatically
