I have a similar problem. The common denominator seems to be the SB5101. I have a brand new Belkin Surf 300N, same issue. The modem will not give DHCP to the router. I can connect fine via ethernet to the modem directly.
This modem seems to be a dinosaur.

Wireless light flashes & can't connect

This post is dedicated to describing the process of fixing an orange light on a Belkin router. But, first, it's important to know about the reason for the orange light. The orange light on the brilliantly-designed Belkin router provides an indication that either the particular connection had not been developed or the router is not capable of detecting the Internet. It might be due to the defected router, unplugged modem, and so forth.

As long as your laptop doesn't have a firewall enabled then you should almost always be able to get connected by directly connecting your unit to the router.

Here is how to Determine if you Windows Firewall is enabled
Once it is disabled try resetting your Belkin back to Factory default Settings.
If all that still doesn't work I would attempt attaching it to the modem, and know once and for all if you router is working correctly.

Hope this help, and if it did please remember to leave Feedback/Testimonial. Thanks.

I bought a Belkin Basic wireless router. How do I connect it to my modem if there is only one ethernet port in the back?

This is a wireless router. The one Ethernet cable has to be connected to the modem. The computer connects wirelessly. Check to make sure your computer has a wireless card.

Trying to get my ps3 connected so i can get online

You need to disable the UPnP function on the Belkin router. Log into the router(192.168.2.1), and look under System Settings. If you haven't changed the password on the router, the default password is blank, i.e., no password.

Belkin G Wireless Router Connection problem

Sounds like a faulty router or issue with the firmware if it is unaccesible, your best solution is to factory reset the device and try again.
