Pool Pump does not Prime.

Pump worked fine at end of season but just opened pool and pump won't prime. 1. Noticed a leak at the bottom of the strainer housing. Would that explain the pump not priming or might there be another cause? 2. Since I will be replacing the strainer housing, I'd assume I should replace the pump as well.(I believe the pump and strainer housing are OEM and are 20 years old) 3. My original pump was an OC smith. How would I determine the type of Strainer housing? The Pump was an OC smith and a Hayward clorinator. 4. My pool is a 35-40,000 gallon with a single skimmer. What size pump should I be looking for. Thanks
Craig

How do you prime it?

Hi Tom:
Priming is essentially the action of getting the air out so that the pump can push water. Sometimes there is a plug at the top of the pump. If you remove it, either air and then water will come out, or nothing comes out and you can see no water inside. Fill it with water, put the plug back in, and it should work. If the pump is higher than the water level in the pool you will have a bigger task.
We'll cross that bridge if we need to.

Prime

Hi to prime your pump you fill the strainer basket with water and make sure all connections are tight with no leaks. Once you seal the lid turn on your pump and it should prime. If you have an issue you can force water through the suction line by putting a hose in the skimmer and force the water through your suction line. Time to Open the Swimming Pool

Pool pump wont prime when in pool mode, but will run in hot tub mode. Hot tub is 3 ft higher than the pool... is this a bad impeller? I think it may have run for a few hours without a prime , as I...

I assume that it pumps from/to the hot tub. If so, the pump is fine. Look for any air leaks in the piping/hoses from the connection in the pool to the inlet of the pump.

I came back from vacation to find the pool not running. Power must have triped while gone. Turned power back on at the breaker. Went to the autopilot to turn system on. Autopilot was fine and had power but...

It sounds like your pool pump might have lost its prime. Make sure the lid is on and is secured tightly. Check your water level to make sure that it is above the skimmers. Make sure the suction lines, pump strainer, and pump pot are full of water. After you check these things, re-prime. If this still doesn't solve the problem, also check for clogged baskets and worn out gasket/valve. Make sure that you don't have an visible air leaking in the pool (look for bubbles).

10000 gal pump

as with any pool pump they have to prime themselves,, close up the unit as it was before,, and turn it on,, remember that water is also the cooling agent for these pumps, check to see that its pumping water as before,, ( yours may even have a place to prime it,, Look for an easy access prime hole in the pump unit itself )

We do not know where the air filter valves are

Air filter?

Remove the strainer basket cover ... fill with water ... check the gasket ... replace if questionable ... close the cover and SNUG the top down. Start the pump ... it should run just fine.

If you are sucking air, tighten the strainer basket cover a little.

Still sucking air? You will have to find the air leak. You might plug the leak with plumbers putty.

Why is my filter system losing prime?

It could be one of these issues with your pool filter. Try these solutions. If none of them work, let me know and I will do some more research.

1. D.E. coated with normal accumulation of pool dirt, algae, etc.
Solution: Bump your filter.

2. Pump strainer basket or skimmer basket is clogged.
Solution: Clean

3. Pump impeller vanes clogged.
Solution: Cleaning with a stiff wire brush through the pump strainer opening will usually work. Alternate method would be to disassemble and clean.

4. Air Leak on suction side of pump.
Soultion: Check cover gasket, hand knobs, hose, clamps, etc. Replace or tighten as necessary.

My Jet Pump Looses it's prime at night.

I assume the pump is not running at night. If the pump is higher than the pool, and the inlet and outlet to the pool are both under water, then you have a small leak. This could be allowing the water to leak out of the line. Or, if the leak is higher than the pool surface it is allowing air to leak into the line, which allows the prime to run down into the pool. If you found this useful, please vote. Thanks.

How to prime my Pool?

Prime is the term we use to state that the air has been mostly purged from the pump and the pump is moving water. When you have lost the prime, your pump is no longer pumping water through it. Sometimes it can be very difficult to regain the prime on the pump. This will tell you how to get the prime back in these difficult situations
