Yep, same thing. I thought it was me! Thanks for letting me know it the laptop!

I have the exact same problem and then some.I have seen my cursor jump all over the screen for no apparent reason. I have seen my computer open and close programs all by itself. It gives a whole new meaning to the idea of a ghost in the machine.

I called Acer technical support and they talked about wiping the hard drive and reloading the entire operating system. I have spent many hours installing software and windows updates, so I was unwilling to do that, and having a technical background in computers myself I had some questions about wheather or not that would work. There is some type of glitch in the Acer system itself that needs to be corrected!!!!

The touchpad on my Acer laptop model 5315 has gone completely mad. I've tried installing various drivers but the problem remains the same! The cursor just keeps moving across the whole screen on its own accord. I tried re-installing the Synaptic driver, then I tried the windows own driver followed by an ALPS driver but nothing seems to fix it! Please help!

I have also the same problem with the touchpad causing the cursor to skip & jump around the screen for no reason. On top of this though it also completley freezes sometimes & the only way I have found to fix this is by logging off & back on again. Acer Tech Support were initially quite helpfull but the last communication from them is suggesting I do a complete restore of the O/S because they think its probably a software conflict involving something I have installed. But I dont want to do a complete restore because the mouse was playing up right from the moment I first used it, even before I installed any software of my own....The whole situation is driving me crazy & Acer need to admit they have a problem with the Alps pointing device.

Hello. I own a aspire 5520-5679. And hapenned as you described. In my opinion is a deffect from hardware, the touchpad. So you have to disable it. Thats what I did. The faileur: too sensitive in my opinion. I use a microsoft trackball optical. Anyway, I don't like to use a touchpad.I took laptop to acer, they reinstalled system. Same problem.

  • Anonymous Nov 08, 2008

still looking for a fix. Acer is clueless.

  • Anonymous Nov 26, 2008

I am a new compter owner who is also just learning to type. While typing the manuscript of the book I am writing, the cursor started jumping randomly around the screen, landing amid previously typed words. I am already tired of watching the screen to be sure I am in the right spot. I even tried typing single finger with nothing else touching the computer, and it still jumps.

    Acer Aspire 5520-5912 + Vista = FRUSTRATION

The touchpad has a mind of its own. I wish I would have spent the extra money for an Apple! Sometimes I'd like to throw this computer in front of the snowplow! When! Oh When is someone going to admit that this combination sucks! More time spent looking for fixes than doing actual work or PLAY! That's it! I'm buying a Mac!

  • xaike Jan 30, 2009

Most frustrating thing ever, the touchpad can work fine for half hour or so, then it just goes crazy, and i can't click anything i want to because it jumps about so much. And after a while it just stops working totally, I know few other people from college with the same problem, i wish someone would find out how to fix this stupid thing. Orgionally i took it back to the shop, they took it for a week and said it was repaired, but they didn't actually do anything but remove everything on my laptop.

  • tomsr1 Apr 28, 2009

I have the same problems as described by the person with the original problem...........I cannot find a driver to correct this nagging and frustrating problem...................Does anyone have any Ideas.........I would really like to shut off the Touchpad.........

  • treky01 May 02, 2009

I had exactly the same probleme as everyone else exepte it got worse and and started clicking madly aswell as just shoting across the screen which made my life a living nightmare. so I disabled the tap and that made a bit of a difference but I realised after a while that it was because my computer was getting very hot very quiqly directly undernethe the pad. So i sent it back( it was still under warenty at the time) and for a while it was great it didn't get hot at all but that was short lived, all they did was clean out the vents. anyway I'm no longer under garantie and the entire pad has completely died now. I have to plug in a mouse to do anything, the only way I've found to keep the dam thing cool is to keep it in economie mode and elevated.

I had the same problem. It is due to the touch pad being to sensitive. My fix was to buy a usb mouse, and disable to trackpad by hitting the Fn key and F7. No problems anymore

AWESOME! Everyone keeps saying to disable the touch pad but you are the only one to TELL US HOW! Thank you!!

No matter what I seemed to do, my computer would randomly select and deselect things. I tend to use my laptop for gaming and word processing. So having it randomly click and highlight was getting to be a huge hassle. I tried the tapping off while typing, but it seemed to be more of a glitch then actually selecting something.
Rather then go hunt through the mouse functions, try fn+f7 to disable the touchpad completely.

The solution is so easy even a caveman could do it: throw away your crappy acer. Acer is a junk vendor. My laptop from them and my gf\'s is also. Touchpad Cursor doesn\'t work in hers (this thread) and the touchpad cursor is the only thing in mine that does work... I can\'t verify this since nothing else in it works (video, processor, audio), but SOMETHING has to work in it so I\'m going to claim it\'s the touchpad.

Acer sells knock-off Chinese stuff (imagine that... someone that rips off Chinese products... hahaha).

Same problem here.
I used some of yours advice and it helped.
Naturally the problem was not accidentally touching the pad - that would have been too obvious. Disabling the touchpad did help the problem but then again, it disabled the pad.
I figure that the problem was overheating. As my pc tends to heat quite much occasionally, especially right below the touchpad, I figured that letting it cool down and vacuuming excess dust from it it should work.
And what do you know, it works now brillianty. Though, I decided to elevate the laptop from one end so that it will get air below it better, so that it can cool itself down and not repeat the problem.
I have also had some problems with the volume-roll on the left-hand side: It doesn't always take any commands no matter how I roll it, and then when it decides to do so, it does all the alterations which i've done in the past two hours in 2 seconds. This sometimes results in a loud bang if I happen to be listening to any sort of audio. So I hope this "less heating" would help with the same problem.
From now on, I'll see that my laptop is as cool as possible at all times.

  • Anonymous Apr 08, 2010

Disabling the touchpad helps if you don't want to use a touchpad.
But since it's a laptop, I shut it down, opened some hatches and vacuumed all possible dust from it. As I started it again, I made sure that it has enough space to cool itself down: elevate it a bit. Laptops often have a problem of having key-features such as fanning on the bottom, where air-resources are scarce.

Please dont talk about wrists touching the touchpad. It is not the problem. The pointer jumps and clicks sometimes on its own, even if I am several meters away from the machine.

Also related problem in my machine is that is is amazingly slow. And it has been doing this right from the beginning. Sometimes its acting like a 10MHz pentium. I am able to write about 100 times faster than the machine can come up with letters.

Disabling touchpad would be quite stupid for me because this is a LAPTOP not a desktop. If I wanted to have wires and stuff Id go for desktop in a first place.

Support from acer is zero. I am still under warranty. I will return this machine next week.

(btw it too over 15 minutes to write this because pointer jumped allover the screen several times and selected text I already wrote only to erase it when I continued writing)

I found that if I place a small piece of cardboard over the pad when I'm not using it, I have no more cursor jumps.

I found solution for this problem.Just take a clear scotch tape and tape it around the touch pad.The problem I found that is touch pad in this models pretty close to keyboard and when you typing someting your hands accidentally touch the touch pad.Using scotch tape you decrease sensitive in touch pad and now you can type everything without a problem.Let me know if its fixed for you. Thanks

  • Anonymous Sep 06, 2012

The problem is not touching the pad...I'm typing with one finger, suspended over the keyboard, and it still happens.

I had the same problem with the touchpad.
I had tried all of the adjustments. I finally downloaded a "synaptics pointing device driver", which has helped a great deal .... jumps are very infrequent ... mainly due to an accidental touch of the pad while typing.

Overall, however, I have found that a wireless mouse is the best solution.

I disabled tapping too. Much happier. Is it possible to upgrade the RAM? I've got a gig and it still takes for friggin ever to boot.

Actually, you don't even have to disable tapping completely. If you click the touch pad icon in the lower right menu bar, then select Tapping, you can just turn select 'tap off while typing.' It solved my problem.

Make sure when you are typing wrest is not touching the touch pad.

It also may be due to virus, so if you have any virus scanner make a full scan for the system.

If you don't have any scanner you can try this for demo:

If any more question just Ask me

Thanks
Iqbal
