I have a compaq presario v5207nr and have recently added skype software and software for a microsoft lifecam. Then when I tried to start it up it just runs and runs and doesn't get to users page to choose "log on as". Have run a hard disk test and it came back with 07 Fail. What can I do
Old compaq, with full service tag data wow./! 13 years old now.
XP right? 2001 to 2007, your PC did not have vista. new.
XP is dead, did you know that?
then you fail to tell what OS is running,
guess what that matters, (we know what it was new but....)
if it's XP and or vista is does, XP is dead now for 4 years.+
and worse IE is even more dead, and now banned on many web sites and is an expanding *****.
did you go to MX owned skype home page and read the minimum requirement there, first?
there are 3 issues here.
here is what skype said, believe it.
https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA10328/what-are-the-system-requirements-for-skype
as you can see new skype is dead for XP
XP is a virus magnet as is its unsupported IE versions, (all)
note the tight restrictions on w10, wow.
the answer is UPGRADE
there is no other way. w7 can be bought and loaded, but that costs $120
then you find out many devices in the laptop
called CHIPS,(sound,NIC, video,camera,etc)
are missing drivers or worse, never made for W7. we can find most but not all.
better is go to the used PC store.
even GOODWILL, find a working PC , (any) that has working w7 on it or newer.
be best, cost wise. (and x10 better support)

I beleive that you are trying to install retail versions of XP which will not be able to detect the Hard Drive in the Notebook as it is a SATA drive and Windows XP will not be having the drivers for SATA Hard Drives by default.
In this situation, I recommend you to check and disable the SATA Native support option available in the BIOS.
Start the Notebook and start tapping the F10 key which will take you to to the BIOS Setup window.
In this, go to the System Configuration tab using the Arrow keys and select the option as Disabled next to SATA Native Support.
Press the F10 key again to save the settings done and exit BIOS.
Now, you should be able to use the Windows XP disk and install Windows XP Operating System in your Notebook without any issues.
By disabling the SATA Native Feature, the Hard Drive of the Notebook will be detected as a IDE Drive because of which we will be able to install XP without any issues.
Donot Re-Enable this feature in the BIOS again as the Operating System may not boot. Let the option next to SATA Native Support be Disabled.
Hope this helps...

Hi there.
The hard drive has failed and you will need to replace it.
If the laptop is under a year old take advantage of the warranty and send it in to be repaired for free.
Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Backup your programs immediately to a thumb drive or external HD. The hard drive may be on the brink of failing. You can replace a hard drive, it's your information thats on it that you may not be able to if it totally crashes!

try to remove first your battery and use only the adapter.
If you were to log on to the
manufacturer's web site, I think you will be pleasantly surprised as
usually one is able to download, by model number, Customer
Instruction Manuals, list
of Dealers for spare part supplies and
Driver
downloads
(if applicable) as required.
Just Google the manufacturer's name and
follow the links. Make certain you are directed to the manufacturer's
web site as some search engines direct you to other sites and they
charge for the information that is normally free of charge.
I hope this helps.
