SOURCE: monitor says burn -in

Sounds like an inverter problem. If the power supply is internal replace the capacitors coming out of the voltage regulators. These are usually 1000mf and/or 470mf. If that doesn't do the trick look up the numbers on the 8-pin chips that drive the secondary transformers on the inverter to see if they are getting the right voltages.
Good Luck!

Normally pressing up/down enter should get you out of the burn-in mode.Has the problem surfaced suddenly or some sequence of buttons have got you to this mode?

SOURCE: seem to have locked the monitor in burn in mode

This problem is a failure of the control circuit of the logic section of the monitor. The control circuit has latched on this function due to failure of some component or the control itself. This problem requires you to return the unit for service at the dealer or take to service center. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: VA1703wb Viewsonic Monitor backlight

The problem can be bad power supply feeding the backlight inverter circuits due to bad caps, or in the inverter circuits, or worst case will be bad lamps, you need to open it up and tell us what you see inside first, good pictures will help, see example of failed VIEWSONIC due to bad caps: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
