If your camera is not relatively new and you're running Vista or Windows 7, your computer may have problems seeing it. Unfortunately, this can't be corrected because the drivers were not updated by Canon for your camera. But there exists a good, if not better alternative way to download your photos. Please don't take the following as a sales pitch as it's not, but please see this link, as it describes the use of an inexpensive external card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue.
You are going to have to download a Windows 7 driver from Canon that will allow them to communicate.
Go to this page here (click here) and under the Drivers and Software, where it says "Choose your operating system", select Windows 7.
Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Windows Photo Gallery or any other photo cataloging program.
thats also known as a powershot a40 - heres the support site for that camera http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=221&modelid=8288
if you goto the drivers and download tab - here you will find a manual - for zoom browser and the camera
You should be able to connect the camera to your computer with a supplied USB cable - and then the zoombrowser software should detect your camera connected and offer to transfer images
In the manual on Page 126/128 explains how to connect camera to PC
Also explains in the manual how to transfer the images.
If your PC has a memory card reader you can transfer that way - also explained in the manual
Don't give up on your A40 just yet. I still have mine, and although it's only a 2MP camera, IMO the pictures that it can produce in auto mode are some of the best from Canon's line of cameras.
But unfortunately as you've discovered there is no driver for its use with Window's Vista. What this means is that you can't plug the camera directly into your computer to download pictures. But that may be a blessing in disguise as there is an alternative, much easier way, to download photos from digital cameras.
Most professional photographers utilize inexpensive external card readers to download their photos. There are several important reasonsdiscussed in this blog articlefor using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue. If you do purchase one, make sure that it is stated CF card capable, and for use with Window's Vista.
I had same problem. Called Canon and found out A40 is not compatible with Vista so there is no driver. But you can download pics to your Vista by purchasing USB Memory Card Reader/Writer you can find at Walmart for about $12.00. You put your Flash card in device and has USB that plugs in computer for downloading pics.
If you have a Vista, it is not compatible. It will not download the Zoom browser. I had to purchase a Memory card reader/writer to download pics on my laptop from my camera and by passing the printer.
