Smoking Kenwood Chef A901

When I was running my Chef A901 on speed setting 2, creaming oil and sugar for a cake, it started smoking. This is a 220V unit purchased in 1983 and has had only light use.

The visible wires do not look old or cracked and the unit was still running smoothly although it smelled like something was burning when it was smoking.

I know that nothing could have splashed out of the bowl onto the motor. Any suggestions? Also, do you have any repair manuals (PDF) for this model? My old owners book doesn't show how to get into the motor to check wiring.

Thanks

    Hi smokin Kenny

I have only a couple of days ago had the some problem.

It's probly not just the resistor that has gone, mine has got so hot the ID coulors are unreadable, you'll find the smoke came from the capacitor, a 0.1uF, that sits next to it. Best left for a techi to fix. More likely better to replace the board for a new one.

I have the same problem with the A901 model. Can anyone tell me how to take it apart to get to the capacitors?

I have just had the exact sme problem.
It is caused by a 1 watt resistor on the board.
You will also find that very possibly the large capacitor, a 0.1uF, has aso burnt out. This capacitor would have cracked open down the side and that is where the smoke came from.
parts can be replaced by a repair man and possibly a better solution is to have the board replaced, They are availiable still.

The resistor is 56 ohm to the 47 nf capasitor and the other is 220 ohm to the 150 nf capasitor. I replaced them all and upgraded the capasitors to 5 watt with ceramic.

To maintain safety be sure to use class X capacitors. They will be marked 'X' or 'Class X'.

Did somebody know the size of the resistor?

the capacitor (0.047uF) and resistor has burn out (I cant read the the size anymore)

The resistor will get hot on slow speed (slower the hotter) inspect this closely ,you say "visible wires" ? need to look under the motor cover for the speed control components
