Question about Technics SL-1200 Turntable

Dodgy platter one of my my sl-1200 platters must be loose or something, perhaps even somthing to do with the magnetics? dont know... at the slightest touch the platter becomes offset and shudders causing the styli to drag across the hole track ;.(

i have narrowed it down too movment in the pin in the centre of the platter... is it possable for this to be tightened somhow?

Problem is with the center shaft/spindle. Part can be replace, but not tightened. This happens over time. You can purchase the PART HERE.

Hi, could just be platter not fitted hard down on spindle. I suggest you remove the platter and place it upon a dead flat surface to check to see that the platter is flat. If it is flat refit to turntable ensuring it is hard down on the spindle. If bent discard and replace with new platter.Platters can be ordered for all model 1200/1210 from styluscity@gmail.com

Motor problem?

If its still working then GREAT! The direct drive system uses magnetic frequency to drive the table platter. If you havnt already....Remove the platter and clean the coke off the magnet under it. Not sure at this point but hope that helps!

Just bought a new technics sl-1200 turntable and the pitch speeds up and down causing music to sound funny....

You will need to check your belt for wear. Lift felt on platter and check belt tension. It may need replacing. To replace, simply lift platter section of the unit, taking note of the belt position. replace and your problem will be solved

if you take off the platter does the motor spin? if not the motor isnt working. also make sure that the platter is able to freespin if not it may be unbalanced and the turntable needs to be opened up and leveled/raised. very simple its just a few screws on the motor in the center of the turntable.

Technics sl 1210 will not start up

did you ever open the turntable. It sounds like the on/off switch is bad. Remove the platter and screws with a phillips screw driver and just make sure the connections are in place. make sure you disconnect the power first. let me know what happens afterwards.

The platers arn't hard and heavy any more

Have you tried swapping out the platters? Sometimes this will fix the problem. Also, although VERY RARE, make sure you were sold the right platters with your turntables. I doubt they found a pair of copy cat platters, but ya never know!

You can remove them by just lifting them up and off. There is a magnet that holds them down, so if you encounter resistance, just tap the center shaft with a wood block, mallet, or similar. Don't hit it too hard, you just want to disrupt the magnetic force, and/or loosen the platter from the shaft (which sometimes gets stuck).

Other than that, I've never heard of this type of issue, and I repair these things for a living.

This is a common problem. If you have another 1200 turntable, switch out the platters and see if that fixes the problem. Usually, the problem does not carry over.

There is nothing to screw or tighten. You can install a new SPINDLE - and it should fix it. But might not be necessary if you just swap your platters out.

There seems to be 2 issues with this unit. Usually when the platter speeds up very quickly, one of the IC (integrated circuits) are faulty and needs to be replaced. However, I've never seen the 33/45 lights come on in addition. So, perhaps the issue started with faulty 33/45 switches, and it then caused a short to one of the IC's.

This will have to be professionally serviced, as it is not an easy fix. There are various circuits on the main board which control the drive, so it's a matter of diagnosing which is the culprit. The 33/45 switches will also need to be tested/replaced.

the platter should have two holes on it,my 1210 does. put your thumb on the spindle and a finger in each hole and prize the platter off. theres no screws holding the platter on just a tapered spindle shaft. it is quite heavy so a good pull will do it. as for the scraping it might be as simple as packaging placed under the platter to secure it for shipping, technics are built really well so i cant imagine it could be anything major. i hope this helps you out, if you need any more help let us know. please also let us know how you get on. darren
