I had the same problem with mine and got it working by doing the following while on the phone to Garmin. Plug your charger cord into the device and your computer (do not use a laptop, you need the higher current from a desktop for this). Hold the power button down for as long as it takes for the Garmin logo to display, this could be as much as 1 minute. As soon as the image shows on the screen, release the power button. If your Garmin isn't completely shot you will see it boot up. If you have the Garmin Web Updater program on your computer, run it and update the operating system software to insure you have the latest greatest from Garmin. Once that is done, update your XML data files - they'll be on the list of updates if you need them. Once those are done you can update any voice or language files you'd like. Lastly, leave your GPS plugged in at least an hour or two to give it a charge. Overnight would be better to insure your battery is really well powered up. At this point your Garmin should function normally. The Garmin tech I spoke with told me some units start acting funky when the battery runs down too low and if it's REALLY dead it won't even take a charge or power up when you hook up your charger cord. Try holding the power button for as long as it takes to get a spark & you should be on your way. If not, call Garmin's support number for your locale & they're do their best to get you back up & running again. Cheers, Jeff
You can charge it using the car charger that came with it by plugging it into the cigarette lighter socket of your car and the narrow end into the back of the satnav. You need to have power going to the cigarette lighter socket. On some cars that means that the car has to be running. There's a little led (light) on the plug which shows when it's receiving power. Charging this way takes about 4 hours.
You can also charge the satnav using an optional mains charger which also takes 4 hours.
Finally you can charge it by connecting it to the USB port of a computer for 8 hours. Both the computer and the satnav need to be on.
There's a battery state indicator on the screen of the satnav which shows if the battery is charged or not, on the screen which shows WHERE TO and VIEW MAP. It only shows when the satnav is not connected to a power source so you need to stop charging it to view it.
Most garmin nuvi satnavs take 4 hours to charge with a mains charger or a car charger. It takes 8 hours with a computer. There's a batter indicator on the screen that shows WHERE TO and VIEW MAP. It will probably only appear when the charger is disconnected if it's the same as other garmin nuvis.
Sometimes the satnav goes into mass storage mode, when plugged into the charger, and shows the unit connected to a computer because the charger plug is not pushed in fully to the back of the satnav. It appears to be fully in but it's not. Pushing it in further may solve the problem.
This is meant to happen when it's connected to your computer but not to your car charger. Sometimes it happens, when connected to a car charger, because the mini USB plug on the charger lead doesn't go in far enough into the satnav. It feels like it's fully in but it's not. If you push it in further it should solve the problem.
It takes 8 hours approx to charge a satnav connected to your computer but only 4 hours approx with the car charger or mains charger.
This usually happens when the charger is not compatible with the unit. or you could be using a non-Garmin charger. There are some "store-brand" chargers that work well, and some do not. Store brand Charger are made to be Universal. To fit multiple devices and maximize profits. You want a Garmin Specific Charger, and here is the logic why...
The reason behind it:
1. The Garmin USB Cable that you connect to your computer has a special 4-pin configuration telling the GPS that is is connected to a computer. This is the configuration most "generic" chargers use to maximize device compatibility.
2. The Garmin Car Charger has a different pin configuration with 2 less pins, giving it only positive ( + ) and Negative ( - ) to charge the GPS.
When the GPS receives the 4 pin, which is also found in a "Motorola" Cell phone charger, it will automatically sense that it is connected to a computer.
Long winded, but I wanted to explain why. Simple fix, Just go get a new charger and make sure it's Garmin compatible.
That could be because it is not the correct charger. It is going into interface mode. The small usb port is for downloading maps but I have seen some aftermarket charger that will charge through the usb port instead of the cradle bracket. Thanks
I connected the unit to the car charger instead of the USB charger and then held down the reset for 10-15 seconds, after which the system would show the computer connection on the charger and then boot up when not on the charger.
Steps: 1) Disconnect the nuvi from the charging cable. 2) Press and hold the battery meter icon for 8 seconds. This puts the nuvi into "system test" mode. 3) Plug in the power cable. 4) Click "Exit." The nuvi will reboot, but remain in GPS mode!
The problem is with the battery, DC will not fully charge the battery to its required capicty to work. You need an AC charger and to charge it fully ( 10 hrs Max) and then try it. It needs a lot of power to drive the screen and connect to satellites. Invest in an AC charger and all should work properly
