Check the Sound Drivers in device manager if the device is not installed you need to download the drivers from HP Web site by using the Product Number If you can please specify the Product Number and Serial Number of the Laptop
do a thorough scan you system for viruses if you do not do so regularly
do a surface scan of you hard drive
3 possible solutions (assuming widows os as you do not say)
1 insert you os installation disc - go to control panel \ system \ hardware \ device manager \ sound \ (audio hardwares) - select all audio drivers - right click, update
2 go to http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html download audio drivers specific to you model, install per their instructions
3 if you have install one of the many quirky av apps you have to go to their website to download & install their proprietary drivers
I have had the same problem this might sound bit extreme but it worked after re-installing windows xp (if you have the recorery disks)When laptop starts up hold down "f11"
Stephane,
I ran into the same problem after wiping out my Compaq nc6320 and trying to install XP Pro. The fix is to disable SATA Native mode. To do this:
Enter F10 Setup then System Configuration>Device Configurations>SATA Native Mode and disable it, save the changes and now you should be able to install XP Pro. Remember, when I did this the drive was blank, I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
Best of luck!
Bryan
P.S.
