I have a bmw 318i N reg.after a run of 30-40+ miles the enigine wont start...we've given it into many garages but no-one seems to be able to solve the problem?

Sounds like the bonnet switch might be going out. You have an electrical contact switch that tells the alarm computer if the bonnet is open or closed. Either a miss adjusted or worn switch will send a false signal to the computer making it think it is open when it is not, you will also want to check the wiring that goes to the switch for signs of chaffing or kinks as the wire itself could get and send a false signal.
Looking at engine from front of car, the tensioner screws into the left side of the timing cover about half way up. You will see the hex head protruding.
the fuses u are looking for are as follows:
From the top left first row its# 4
then the bottom row its # 19
I also wanted to point out. from 1989 to 1996 the brake switch was the common failure for bmw's
the series it included were 318i, 525-540i, and all 7 series. if the fuses dont fix it.. its the switch
located under a panel u need remove on the drivers side on the steering collum
