THE UNIT WILL NOT TURN ON

My Garmin Nuvi 1490 was on for five or six hours driving then the screen went dark and now unit will not turn on or light up screen at all ? ANY HELP OUT THERE ?

Try resetting your unit with the reset button on the bottom. If this doesn't work, slide the power button all the way to the left and hold it for 8 seconds.

Same thing happened to mine. Put the unit in the cradle (just like you are going to recharge it) and press the reset and mode button at the same time for 3 seconds. This will "wake" the unit up.

See if you can find the reset button on the unit and push it while the unit is on. On newer units the reset button is on the back, but on older units it may have a faceplate cover around the edge of the screen you have to remove and the reset button is sometimes located under the faceplate...this may work

push and Hold the power button down while you push reset, keep power button pressed til it boots again. If it does not, and it's in warranty ship it to garmin. If it's out of warranty, have someone open it up and remove the battery for a couple of minutes.

could the battery be dead? Leave it to charge on the wall charger for several hours. Then try again. There is a way to do a hard reset....

Hold down Menu and Find buttons at boot, you will get a screen like this. That should tell you if your cornice drive is working or not.
If it does not, then either you have to send the unit in to Garmin to fix for $275 or try fixing it by your self, I'm trying to fix one my self. I will post when I'm done either way :)

Have you tried resetting the unit? Remove the faceplate and press the reset button on the right side of the unit. This may help.

My problem exactly. Unit would start up, acquire satellites, then the screen would go blank with a single vertical line. Unit would not respond to buttons or even turn off. Unit works fine after I did the reset:

- w/unit OFF, press and hold QUIT+DOWN+MENU
- press and release the power button, release DOWN, keep holding QUIT+MENU for 5 seconds.
- unit prompts something like: "erase all data;" choose yes.
- you will lose waypoints, etc.
