Insert a DVD disc into the DVD drive. Open My Computer then right click on the DVD drive (it maybe the D drive) - click on Properties - then click on Autoplay..
Depending on the model of your IBM PC, it could be that it has a CD drive and not a DVD drive. The Sims 3 game is on a DVD. If this is the case you will have to upgrade your CD player to a DVD player.
To test if your drive is working insert an original music CD into the drive and see if it plays. If it does play you most likely have a CD player and not a DVD player, which means you will have to upgrade to a DVD player/writer drive anyway. These are relatively inexpensive and retail for approximately $20 to $50.

its either its a lens problem or that was how the CD/DVD Drive was made.
There are some drives that doesn't play white face discs, that is, they select disc and don't play all CD's, so maybe yours fall under this category.
How long have you been using your laptop and has it ever played Cd/Vcd's before?
If it plays them before, then it means your drive's lens is weak, but if it has never played them before, then it means that's how the player was made.
Which ever way, you still have an option of replacing the drive if you wish.
You can get the drivers for the IBM Thinkpad online under www.ibm.com support tab. Fill in the information about your machine and you can download a free copy of the driver.
Hi,
Unfortunalty this is an hardware failure there is nothing you can do.
If you are under warranty i suggest you to contact the reseller/manufacturer to get a replacement unit, it should be no problem at all this is a common issue on thinkpads, CD/DVD player, HDD and batteries are the weakiest part of your system.
Ususally you will receive the part directly from IBM with a explanation about how to swap it, does not requires any technical skill to replace this part !
Thanks and have a nice day

Windows XP Pro is not a problem.
First I would like you to test that DVD with other computer and see that its working fine or not.Sometime you need to clean DVD(movies) cos many scratch on it.
But if it's doesn't work then you need to do few more testing,

check device manager for any problems also double click on your cd device in the device manager and see if there is an error code 41. very common this is a registry conflict easy to fix.
