Built-in flash does not work

Hi,

I had just bought a new canon rebel xti (less than a week old) and when I tried the flash, it does not fire off. The flash will pop up when in auto mode or if you push the flash button, but it just won't 'flash'. The busy flash symbol also comes up before taking a picture , and I noticed that the pictures I take (with the flash popped up) are dark, so the camera is assuming the flash is going off, but it's not. Also, I havent used any external on the camera as of yet.

Same problem, but my flash use to fire. Now it just pops up but does not flash. It is a few months old.

Same problem except my flash used to work. In fact, unless I manually raise the flash, the camera doesn't work properly. Any suggestions?

Canon rebel xti built-in fash does not work in automatic mode - white light goes on when taking pictures

My camera is almost 2 years old and everything worked perfectly until this week. The on camera flash won't pop up. I can manually open it but it still won't fire on any settings. My external 430 EX Speedlite flash works fine. I am hoping for an easy low cost solution!!

DO NOT MESS with a new camera (or any other new equipment).
Take/send it back to the vendor, The purchaser has rights also. Number one it must work.
I don't know your location but in UK (& Europe) we have very strict consumer legislation.

No. The rebel, or any digital canon camera requires the use of the EX or EX II series flashes.

Be aware that the built in flash does not pop up automatically in all picture modes. Try it when in the different modes (on the mode dial) and see what I mean. Does it popo up when manually opened ?, (small button on front left hand side of the viewing pentaprism/flash housing.)

I just bought the 430ex II flash and it won't fire on my Rebel XTI.... i read the manual but I'm not sure whats wrong, have any advice?

I assume that flash is turned on. 430ex flash will fire automatically only in AUTO mode. On manual modes you mus manually force the flash to fire.
If flash doesn't fire at all, consider to claim the vendor or let the vendor to check the flash mounted on your camera.

I have a Canon Digital Rebel XTI and the flash pops up but doesn't fire in any mode. Is there something I can do to fix this?

It sounds to me as if the xenon bulb within the built in flash has expired.  It's a quick and easy job for a qualified service engineer to repair this for you.

Canon Rebel XTi - won't shoot

Hi

Sounds like you have shot so many photos you have worn out the shutter box. The box is usually good for about 10,000 actuations... so... sounds like you have gotten far more than that out of it.

I have one XTi with a buddy right now who is a certified Canon, Nikon and Fuji tech and he's putting in a new shutter box for one of my customers. It's the first one he's done so I will see if he wants to keep doing them or not and how much he would want if he decides he will continue to do them for me.

We are an affordable digital camera repair business, if we can help you with your repair then please let us know.

Good luck from Darntoothysam com

Built-in flash does not fire off

Not really a solution, and about 3 years late :) my EOS400D also developed the same problem (however it was also coincidence that I had just updated to Firmware 1.1.1 (from 1.0.4), but basically the flash would pop up, but wouldn't fire (so not the standard problem with the microswitches), I found with a bit of forum searching that if you hold the flash down to almost clicking it in and then shoot it does actually fire. I am going to see how much it costs to get this fixed and will post what the actual fault is if I can understand the repairman.

Flash doesn't work

I found the answer and fixed my flash. Look on http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00ODWf

This will describe how, if you have been using a speedlite alot, than the little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent down thus constantly pressing down (toward the bottom of the camera) the small button which deactivates the pop-up1.gif flash even when the speedlite is not attached. Just bend the tab up a little with a jewler's screwdriver, turn the camera off and on and voila!! Fixed!!! Dan describes pushing the tab down, but on the xti, the tab needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch and fix the problem. Thanks to Dan D on photonet for saving me a service call.
