Changing cable port

VGA and DVI is in the way the video signals travel. VGA connectors and cables carry analog signals while DVI can carry both analog and digital. DVI is newer and offers better, sharper display compared to VGA. You can easily tell them apart because VGA connectors (and ports) are blue while DVI connectors are white. An Analog monitor, such as a CRT type of monitor, uses a VGA cable,

Flat LCD screen monitors are Digital.
Some may have a VGA Cable attached, but the best cable option is a DVI cable,

Using these two examples, does one apply to the eMachines, and one apply to the monitor?

Let us say the monitor has a DVI cable.
The eMachines Desktop PC has a VGA port. (Connector)
For this you would simply use a DVI to VGA adapter,

Now notice...........this is a VGA MALE to DVI FEMALE.

The DVI cable on the flat LCD screen monitor, has a male connector.
The contact pins of it go into socket holes, in the DVI end, of the DVI to VGA adapter.

The VGA port on the eMachines, has socket holes.
The male VGA connector end on the DVI to VGA adapter, has contact pins.

Point?

Make sure you get the correct DVI to VGA adapter.
There is a male DVI to female VGA adapter, also.

This is just one example.
For instance I'm using an HP 2009M 20-inch widescreen monitor, AND an RCA 26-inch HDTV, as dual monitors.

Presently using the HP 2009M with a DVI cable, and the RCA L26HD31 HDTV with a VGA cable.

(I'm also using an ATI Radeon HD5450 graphics card. Pretty 'pud', but it does OK for what I want)

Primer;
A computer sends out a digital signal. To get the best graphics quality, you ideally use a monitor with a digital cable. (DVI, etc)

When you use an Analog monitor on a computer, the computer has to change the digital signal down to an Analog one.
Therefore the graphics quality is not as great.

Digital cable technology now, is DVI, HDMI, Display Port, and Mini-Display Port. And some others I'm sure I've forgotten.

Are you using the VGA connector on the motherboard, (Back of computer), or do you have a graphics card installed?

No, a DVI to VGA adapter will not work. (The TV is looking for the digital signal from a set top box. This is different from the analog signal on the VGA cable.) You need a converter. Your best bet would be a VGA to component video converter. (I am assuming that the Sharp TV has a component video input.) Note a VGA to component video cable will not work. The VGA to component cables are for projectors that read the RGB signal. The component video signal is YPbPr.

Connect the VGA cable to the converter and the component video cable to the TV and the converter with the computer and TV off. Turn on the TV first and set it to the component video input and then turn on the computer. Then (assuming the VGA port is enabled - adjust in the BIOS if needed) set the computer's video output to the VGA port. (On my Windows 7 laptop, this can be done by right-clicking on the desktop. Choose Graphics Properties and set the display to the external monitor or both. Click Apply and then confirm the change (on the external monitor if using the single monitor). (VGA to Composite video converters also exist if you do not have an available component video input on your TV.)

If your computer is fairly new, you may have an HDMI port. Your TV may be able to read the signal with a DVI to HDMI cable. (It depends on the TV. Not all of them will read the computer's signal on the DVI port. Check the documentation for your model. TVs without a VGA port are less likely to support this feature.)

Your either going to need VGA or DVI. You need to check the back of your computer and monitor to see which type of connection you have. Then plug in the appropriate cable.

I see that you are having a check input error on the Monitor/LCD that your are connecting to your Dell tower, please see steps below.

• On your HP 2310E make sure that your HP is set to the input/source that you are using and make sure that you only use one type of video cable for the issue.
• I see that you mentioned that you have a VGA cable and a DVI cable, you can only use one type of cable for a video connection.
• VGA would be the Blue tipped cable connecting to the tower and going to the LCD monitor.
• DVI this is a black cable connecting to a white port much bigger than a VGA port and is rectangular in shape unlike the VGA
• 
• and on your LCD monitor check the input type to see video from the tower.
• everything seems to be OK you just need to change the input of your LCD monitor for the video to show up on the screen.
• also if you are using HDMI for the video u will need to change the setting of your Audio and set HDMI as the Default to have Audio come out from the HDMI connection together with video, the HDMI viedo will automatically be detected as long as the LCD monitor's input is set to HDMI.

you need a dvi to vga adapter not a dvi to vga plug and you must also go into your graphics card setup catalyst control center if its ATI Nvidia Display manager for Nvidia if you boot the computer with it pluged in and you can see the boot screen on bolth displays then its an os thing just right click and select the display manager the activate all display's through the managers

LCD Monitors having multiple inputs have option and option to select and switch between the displays from analog (VGA) or Digital (DVI) inputs. Go to the LCD menu and select input source (DVI)

Was there an installation disc that came with it in the package? Some monitors require software to be used. If you don't have the installation disc, you will most likely find the necessary software on the manufacturer's support site: ProLite Support Driver Download Site.

If the monitor software doesn't solve the problem, try using a different DVI cable. More often than not, these types of problems can be traced back to a faulty cable or port. If the DVI port on the monitor is bad, you will have to use the VGA port as you are now or replace the monitor.

If the DVI port on the video card is bad, you will need to replace it. A good way to test this is if you have another monitor with an available DVI port you can connect to the video card.

Is ether the monitor or video card uses both DVI or VGA port. There may be a switch on the graphic card that changes it from DVI to VGA, often outside the card.

Also is the computer monitor set to the right setting if it can use both VGA and DVI, if using DVI (of any type) it need to switch to digital, and if using VGA it need to be set to analog. This may be a physical switch or using the settings button. (see manual how to change them)


PS: VGA port is a blue D shaped port with 15 pin holes, and DVI is a white rectangle port with one port being a line.

You have failed to specify wheather or not your LCD Display is under Warrenty.

Perhaps these simple trouble shooting procedures will get the job done.

1. use the DVI to VGA adaptor that came with your card

Plug in a regular CRT monitor to the Primary Display Output Port using the DVI to VGA adaptor
( either port can be designated as the primary by you )
I like to use the Port nearest to the motherboard as the Primary

2. plug in the your LCD monitor on Secondary Display port using your DVI cable

At this point you should be able to see your desktop on the Primary CRT Display

3. Go to the display properties and use the Nvidia Dual Display Setup Wizard

set both desktops to CLONED at a resolution of 1024x768 and set the refresh to 60Hz
which is default for most LCD displays , some have higher refresh rates , consult your user manuel

If the display resolution and refresh are set incorrectly for your CRT or LCD you will see
Signal Out of Range ( if the display has the ability to display that error message )

At this stage both displays should be showing a Windows Desktop

If you now see your desktop on both displays , you can now put the LCD on the Primary Port



No Signal Detected ( this means the display device is not receiving a signal )

If your LCD display is still displaying the error message
"No Signal Detected" after performing the trouble shooting proceedures
You may need to read the user manuel about how to enable DVI signal input.

If you are certan you have done everything correctly but still see only "No Signal Detected"

Your LCD Display may need replacement
