If it's not plugged in after charging it and it shuts off could be a bad battery. Do a hard reboot by unplugging laptop, take out battery and hold down power button for 30 seconds. Once done put battery back in, plug in laptop, let charge and try using again with just battery after charging it for a bit.
If you notice after charging the battery overnight and you have the laptop on long enough to see if the battery is not charging it could be a bad charger cord, in which you will need to replace it.
