Magnavox 37MF231D/331D LCD

1. Remove all screws around perimeter, one screw at the lower right at (Side A/V), and 2 1”round plastic knob s.
2. Remove back cover
3. At lower left side remove 2 screws for On/Off switch cut tie wrap that holds wire down for free movement.
4. Disconnect wire connector to side A/V at lower right side
5. Disconnect wire connector to right side circuit Board
6. Disconnect wire connector to left side circuit board
7. Remove the 2 mounting brackets upper left and upper right 2 screws each.
8. Remove 3 screws each side of the metal box in the middle
9. Fold back metal tape off bottom and top of metal box
10. 1 wire connector at top of box I left connected
11. Flip metal box over towards top of Tv. Be careful of wire at top thats still connected.
12. On left side in box is power supply board
13. Towards bottom of board you should see the numbers C2081 and C2074
14. Remove the six screws holding down power supply board
15. Flip board down towards bottom of Tv.
16. Unsolder capacitors replace with new 1200uf 35v and 2200uf 35v 105°C radial capacitors
17. Capacitors should be around 1/2” to 5/8” dia. X 1.25 long appox. 2 Wires come out of one end should be .030 dia.
18. Reassemble in reverse order and enjoy

Replace the two failed capacitors in the power supply they are located at C2081 and C2074 these will show bad. replace them with 2200uF 35v 105C.

2 weeks after warranty expired had same problem. Green light comes on dim then goes bright but TV does not come on. Hit power again and TV finally comes on. Changed out 2074 and 2081 capacitors. They were visually swelled on top. Works good. Bought panasonic capacitors from digikey.com. Ordered a few extra of each since I will probably go through this again every couple of years.

I work in finance and my husband is a jeweler. We have no experience with TV repair. We took it slow and followed ghiaguy58's instruction. We bought 3 SEK102MO35ST and 1 SEK222MO25ST capacitors from Galco Industrial Electronics online. The whole process took us one evening. We did photograph each step so it was easy to put it back together. If you don't have the right tools to do the soldering out source this part. We used a jewelers solder and It worked! . The total cost was under $15 We did it! The TV turns on and off quickly. It has'nt done that since we purchased it. Magnavox should have owned up to the defect in this product.

I had this problem too where the on and off would not work on my 37 inch flat screen magnavox tv. I went to a local electronics parts place and purchased two 50 watt capacitors for $ 2.60 each. they were a little taller and a little bigger (then the 25 and 35 watt bad capacitors) in diameter but worked well and was easy to fit on to the circuit board. I had a little angst in de-soldering. I heated up the solder and uses a solder string to soak up old solder. I was patient and was finally able to pull the bad capacitors free (each were expanded and were easy to see that they were bad). To put in the new capacitors I had to open up the holes where the old capacitors were. I did this by taking a small pin and heating it up with a mini torch. I held the pin with a surgeons scissor like tool and held the torch close to hole to minimize heat loss. (the pin isnt the best for holding heat).
I must admit two of the holes were easy but the other two holes took repeated effort until i was to clear a path through the old solder. Note I have never done any electrical repairs in my life. The old capacitors had markings on it showing you what side was negative. So did the new capacitors. So it was easy to make sure I put the new ones back in the right position. after doing this I wrapped the thin spooled solder around the two long strands of wire (on the new capacitors) and then heated with my weller solder iron. I then snipped the excess off with wire cutters and reassembled. TV works great... I spend about 20.00 total to make this repair. The capacitors, a new tip for my solder gun, the string used to leach old solder, and the two capacitors.

I sent a Magnavox 37MF231D37 out to be serviced under an extended service plan, it had the blinking green power light and sometimes the remote was unresponsivethey they replaced the caps with 35V ones and replaced a 9.1V zener diode (not sure where that is located in the tv), tv seems to be in good working order. Just curious, out of the people who have replaced the caps, how long has your tv been working?

Bravo ghiaguy58, It worked!! Thank you for saving me a bundle. I did everything according to your instructions and now my tv works. The soldering was a bit tricky. I work with soldering glass and it is quite simple to pull the solder off areas not needed. This was not quite the same working with electronics. I must admit I was a bit scared to attempt it. I took some copper foil, put some flux on it and gingerly used it to pull off most of the solder. I then put the board on its side, applied my iron to the soldered side and pulled on the capacitor and it came off. Made sure the possitive side (long side) of the capacitor was facing me and soldered it on. I cut off the excess, put the tv back together again and the tv is now working. Wonderful!! I still get that flashing during the night so am now turning off the tv with the remote and shutting of the tv using a serge protector. Turn it back on the next day using the serge protector and then turning the tv back on with the remote. Works fine. Thank you....

I have a 37MF231D/331D too. I repalce the two Capacitors and it worked. even if you think just one is bad replace the two.only one did looked bad. **** in the new capacitors and woking grate?

I bought this tv as used, not working, for 25 bucks. I'm an old school electronics graduate but haven't really tried to fix these newer tv's. Well, I figured, as long a you know the basics of circuit tracing, testing and familiarity with components, you'll be alright.
opened up the tv and started putting my nose very close to the board to try to smell if something burned. Nothing on the power supply and component all checked out. I have a digital capacitance meter by the way to test capacitor.
then i removed second board, and there was the problem . Part 7001, 8 leg analog IC ,melted. Removed it, tested all components around it to make sure non of them caused it to melt.
here's where i got stucked. The part number was unreadeable and i coudln't get a hold of any schematics.

Did all this and when I went back to turn it on.. The green power light started to flash. =(

I replaced cap 2074 and it lasted over a year. The problem came back and I again opened it up and that time replaced caps 2080-2082. That lasted almost two years. Now the problem is the tv simply won't turn on at all, I do not get the blinking light this time. I opened it up again and none of the capacitors seem to be bad. Not sure what to do now any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm just going to get a new tv and be glad the fix lasted almost 3 years; tv prices have almost been cut in half in this time so I guess I shouldn't complain. This post saved me a lot of money in the long run so Thank You!

Yes! installed radio shack part # 272-1020, follow ghiaguy58's instructions!!had a constant blinking green light and no picture - i followed ghiaguy58's instructions; took about an hour and yes the tv is working once again! $ 4.97 repairthank you ghiaguy58!!

Ghiaguy68..THANKS!! Your instructions were spot on!!! I got replacement parts from Digikey for about $6 and took maybe an hour to do the work. I did remove the one connector you did not just to be on the safe side. Thanks again!!

After 3 years, our Magnavox 37mf231d tv has the green flashing light on the powere button. As described, I replaced the capcitors on the circuit board at location C2074 and C2081 with 2200uf 35v 105 degree capacitors. I assured that the negative and positive leads were soldered in the correct holes.

However, after putting the tv back together, and plugging it back in, the green light is still blinking and it will not turn on?

Any ideas?

I did what bobbyj said . replaced both with 2200uf 35v 105 caps thanks everyody for the info. zener diode? set works fine just saw someone also replaced a 9.1v zenner diode?

I actually got the set to work but I am sceptical of my method. I couldn't find the 1200uF 35V capacitor so the tech at the component store told me to solder in parallel a 1000uF cap to a 220uF cap. It worked!! I don't know how long it will last but so far so good. Can someone tell me if this will last or if I a doomed. Thanks.
