New package unit, Start up procedure, Used old

New package unit, 4-Ton AC / 10 KW Heater kit.Start up procedure, Used the old Miller thermostat w/5 wire blue com. I hooked up the blue com.wire. The old thermostsat wire size was smaller then #18.
Unit started up in less then a minute the 24v transformer 220v burnt up. Looking closer the 45/5 Uf capacitor had a burnt mark through it. It looks like all 24v control side was ok.
Not sure if there was a compressor problem.

Recheck your wiring. It sounds like you have a short in the low voltage ciruit. Also, is it a multi-tap transformer? Some can use more than 1 input voltage and will have 4 or 5 wires on the primary. Make sure the correct wires for the primary are used if it is.

Good morning. Ohm out the transformer secondary coil. If the secondary coil is "open" then the problem is on the low voltage side. If the side that burnt up was the primary side, then look to the line voltage side for your problem.
If the low voltage wiring is correct and your problem was on the low voltage side, disconnect all low voltage at thermostat and at unit....then ohm out all the wires to see if there is a "short" at any of the wires.
When you replace the transformer, add an inline fuse to the secondary side. A 5 amp ATC fuse will work.....use female spade connectors to hook up to the fuse. Then wrap with electrical tape. This will save you from the expense and trouble of having to replace the transformer in the event of a future short. If you have any further questions, comments, concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

I hope you find this information to be very helpful to your moving forward.

You had a direct short. One of the wires shouldn't have been where it was. Tell me the color of the wires and the hook up.

rule of thumb from thermostat
red to R
White to W
Green to G
Yellow or Blue to Y
no comm hook up from t-stat
now the control for the ac is the Y terminal
and the only wire left to Common. Generally speaking. Let me know the wire colors? ken

I have two wires coming from my old thermostat (1 black and 1 white), where do I connect these to on my new digital thermostat?

There are way too many types/brands/models of equipment for anyone to answer that question. Pictures and information on your old thermostat, new thermostat and the heater or ac unit it is controlling are going to be a ton of help.

Goodman package unit heat strips will not turn on

Put meter probes at in put terminal of the element if you read 220volts that mean your relay is good. if you got it there use amp meter on one leg of that element. You should read some amp draw there but if there is no amp draw it mean the element broke.

What's wrong with your current AHU? Any Ruud dealer can assist you. Most 4 ton units work with r-22 or 410a. As a side note, most parts in an air handler can be replaced unless the case is rusted thru.

I recently bought a 4 ton 14.5 SEER Rudd Spilt system using R-410 and matching Rudd furnace. This system replaced a Lennox 10 SEER 4 ton unit. Now that it has gotten hot in Baton Rouge LA 90-93 degrees....

Sounds like the Unit might be low on charge. But without correct readings not sure.
The new unit with 410 will actually cool better due to higher boiling point temp. of freon type.Poor air circulation could also cause problem.Such as dirty filter, too slow fan speed, dirty coil. Also could have obstruction in freon lines either at pump,in line set,or in coil.
Get someone u trust to check it out and ask for their Rudd Dealership Training Credentials.

New Goodman condenser unit run almost contiously using too much e

I'm not sure of the kilowatts. The 10 min on and 5 off is telling me there is to much heat by the thermostat or you house needs more insulation. The new compressor is designed for more efficient run time. The other thing is the unit to big for your house? It should run 10 -15 min when low humidity is in the house. Otherwise longer if its pretty warm inside.
