The earpiece doesn't work on my Samsung Rugby. I can answer a call, but need to use speaker to hear the caller. The volume works fine.

Possible that the earpiece is not working, can be that the speaker is faulty or there is a fault connection. need to remove to confirm using a multimeter.
The emergency switch can be faulty and so is not contacting.

well i'd suggest you take in into a cellular dealer, and have them look ate the speaker or the amplifer on the main board.. I could just be your speaker is shorting and needs to be replaced. If it works good on loud speaker, its deffenately the speaker or the amp..

This is fault on your earpiece and needs to be replaced ip you can remove the panel and confirm if the earpiece has a continuity or if there was any connection issue.
Finally test using a handsfree to confirm that the board is working well and the fault relates only to the earpiece.

sounds like your earpiece has stopped working if you can hear them on loud speaker then you need a new one,you may be able to get one off ebay.

So open the phone and make a audio test on the earpiece , If the sensitivity is low the earpiece speaker is faulty.
