It sounds like you have bad solder connections in the Vertical circuit or the horizontal circuit. The Vertical IC may need to be replaced if resoldering does not help.
You will need to call a good TV Tech for this repair.
Offhand, it would appear that the 'Closed Caption' has been enabled in your TV. This can de disabled in the MENU/Settings. A more detailed procedure would be available in the owner's manual or pls post back to confirm if your TV is a JVC AV-27530.
You probably have to find your original remote to the set and go through setup in your menu. On most sets, there will be a menu item which will allow you to switch from Cable mode to Air mode. If you have no Cable connected, then you must set tuner in Air mode.
If you are using an external device to run on channel three, then try this:
Make sure device (rather it's a vcr or game console), is hooked up to your Antenna Input connector. Also, some of these devices will have a small hidden switch on back that says 3 and 4. Move the switch to 3 position. Turn on device. Go into TV menu and do a Channel scan. This should auto program any device hooked up to the TV antenna input jack to channel three.
Keep in mind that you may not receive anything by Feburary of this year without an HD converter box to tune in channels with and outdoor antenna.
The menu screen does not function the display. Without the original remote or a universal remote that does not have a display button, try unplugging the television for at least 2 minutes or more and plug the tv back in. This should reset the tv display. If the universal remote has a display button, depress the display button until you get the desired display results. Reference the user guide below for the display button.
How old is this TV?
As Tv's age, the high-voltage suffers and they get darker. You
can turn up the screen adjustment on the flyback transformer and buy
some time but:
My experiance is to not put money into a TV that is over ten years
old. TVs stress out their electronic components worse than almost
any other electronic product. After 10 years, there are so many
parts that are ready to fail that your are probably wasting your money
trying to get any more life out of it.
Another option is to wholesale replace the main board from an outfit like Module Exchange at 972-298-1212
Be careful on buying a new one though. Often times, these new
technology ones are much worse. Always Google the model number of
the set you intend to buy and add the word 'repair' or 'complaint' to
see if it is one of the many models that are customer service
nightmares being produced by even the most reputable companies today.
Hope ya fix it!
You didn't mention if you saw fine white diagonal lines running through the screen from top to bottom. If so, you likely have a shorted Picture Tube which is not usually fixable. If there are no lines seen running through the screen, then it is possible the High voltage transformer which also has a screen voltage and focus control built in that could be bad. I would expect the cost of that part to be about $100, so the repair cost total could approach that of a new set I would guess.
sound like you have 1 or a couple of leaky/bad capacitors in the tv's vertical circuit, typically, there sould be 5 to 10 caps. in all, but you just need 1 bad one to cause your problem.
good luck.
