Sony SLV-940HF VCR Problem: clicking noise when tape fully rewinds

Have you tried ejecting the tape?

If the cassette will not eject, the tape is probably fouled on the capstans and will need to be "surgically" removed, VERY CAREFULLY from the machine.

There schould be a release buuton on the rear of the machine. It's usually recessed and may be difficult to see. Press this with the yip if a ballpoint pen and extract the tape. If the tape is wrapped around the record/playback heads your only option is to remove the top cover and manually remove the tape. Sounds difficult but if you take your time it's not too bad a job.

Not worth repair,VCR very cheap these day.Gear under parts,probably can't put it back,must take alot of parts aparts.

Sounds like you have a head-clog. You can purchase a VHS Head Cleaner at Radio Shack for $5.00. If that doesn't work repairing your VCR is not cost effective when you consider that you can purchase a new VHS/DVD combo deck for under $125.00

Now-a-days most of the gears are made out of plastic(HDPE, if I remember correctly), when the rewinding command is given even if one gear tooth is worn/broken it will throw the entire timing out of 'gear'. Since the problem has already occurred, and, this is the only function that has malfunctioned my advice would be to leave it as it is! ('cos repairing/replacing it is manual & therefore a costly affair plus there is no guarantee that the replacedment will function properly)....sodeep

Two things to check here. Lets verify the basic functioning of the unit. Have you tried playing back a pre-recorded tape? If so, please post the results here. I suspect that a pre-recorded tape will fail as well. If so, I'll post instructions on how to resolve the problem.

1st try a different tape.
If it's the same, listen carefully for unusual noises, clunks, grinding, etc. when the tape goes in. Is something binding?

With the tape out, look inside the door, see if you can spot anything in there that shouldnt be there such as a small toy, money, playing card, sandwich, bits of food? Those are the usuals.

Turn the vcr upside down and holding the tape door open, tilt it so if there was a foreign object in there, it would fall out.

Is it having trouble either loading or ejecting the tape? If so, then something is probably awry in that mechanism. Take the top cover off and watch a load or eject operation. If tape isn't fully loaded, and tape threaded, then an error condition will result, as will be the case if it won't eject. Causes include a broken piece of the load mechanism (also called cassette carriage or carriage mechanism), broken or cracked gear. If the mechanism is gear driven, timing is critical, just being out of time one tooth will foul things up. There are often marks on the gears which must line up exactly in a particular mode as specified in manufacturer service literature. Most VCRs since the early '90s are disposeable, very prone to breakage, in contrast to early units which were made like tanks, costing $400 plus.

Dear Rob, There can be two reasons for your problem.Let us consider the simpler and most likely cause.....Belts!!! Unplug the Plug from the Power socket. Open up the top and bottom Panels.Check the belts. Most likely you will find a belt has snapped ( a 80% possibility) or become very very loose. Also check the Tape Loading mechanism,there is a small belt which connects from the Loading motor to the Loading Mechanism. Replace the belts as a entire set. Let me know if this worked out.
