Mark081007, Yes, it could be the "electronic" ballast circuit or the "switch-mode-power-supply" could be going bad or there are swollen electrolytic filter capacitors populating the SMPS circuit board that need to be replaced with good ones or unit may have some poor intermittant solder connections (thermally stressed) causing this problem. Do some reading in my and "buddymc" and "budmrtn" and "louie12fix" (OLD FILE) FIXYA profiles for lots more info that you WILL NEED to make decision on just what you will do about your monitor's black/white screen problem!! Mark, you certainly have a lot of research to do. Problem not new and your ccfl back-lit lcd display isn't any different than ANY other brand in it's basic design and operation principle. Follow all links to other sites for even more info. I'm surprised you haven't been to YOUTUBE for clues about lcd disassembly and repair videos that will help you make decision to do DIY repair or farm-out the work. Once you find out what makes your lcd screen show you all the pretty colors, you will never walk past the energy saving, curlieQ, screw-in, CFL light bulbs in the hardware or homecenter without having a wide smile on your face each time you pass by them!!! Bye for now. 12fixlouie
