1 HP electric motor hums but not turning.

1 HP A.O. Smith 56J inground pool motor was running fine. Is 1 year old, turned it off last night- -went to turn it on today and motor hums but doesnt spin. I removed back cover and can turn motor by hand freely. Also removed motor from front connection and can turn impeller freely.
(can see whole shaft spinning from impeller to back electrical contact point- - -shaft not broken) Its all wired properly, as stated the motor has been running fine since purchased new last June 2009. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Check for a re-set button somewhere on the motor housing.

Opener chain not moving and motor humming

It is likely the motor start capacitor has failed, especially if it gets going when the motor is turned manually.

I have a hayward pump model SP2610X15 that will only hum when turned on. I replaced the capacitor, it did not help. What else could be the problem?

DIRTY START switch or the motor is locked up, breaker off ! remove motor from tank body and see if the motor will turn over if it does could be the switch or the motor is shorted witch there is no fix but a new or rebuilt motor. search your area for your local pool pump motor repair guy with free testing..

The pool timer goes on, the hayward 2 HP pool pump turns on and then causes the circut breaker to pop. After two, three resets, it starts to work. This problem started a week agao. The pump is 9 years old.

When the motor/pump is powered on sometimes it makes a humming noise ans after a few seconds it sets the breakers off. If I manually attempt this a couple of times the pump starts up OK. This does not...

Your motor is covered under a 1 year manufacturers warranty. The issue you describe can be one of a couple problems all of which will lead to permanent motor failure if not corrected. I'd suggest you go back to the place of purchase or contact AOSmith for a warranty center near you.

You can find the warranty center online at:

I have Hayward Centurian SE 2 hp pool motor pump, around 15 years old. Just the other day it started making a loud whining noise. Is there a quick fix for this?

if its whining but still spinning, the bearings are done. If it just makes a loud noise, the capacitor could be bad or the bearings have seized.

The pump only hums when plugged in. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the impellor is locked. Take this part off and then see if the pump is turning but before you do, some of them have a big screw driver slot in the shaft. If it does, turn it to see if you can free the impellor. I have done this many times and they will continue to work for years after. They just get stuck from rust, etc. and also being frozen a little. Hope this helps.

High Ringing Noise

Sounds like it just needs lubricating. It's probably dry seals rubbing against the stainless shaft.

Bad bearings usually make grinding noises. Replacing bearings can be a DIY job, but not a teriffically simple one.
