Quite possibly a bad stick of RAM. Is it an older computer? If it's new, and covered under warranty, pursue that with the place of purchase. It's a LOT cheaper to buy a stick of RAM yourself than to get someone to do it for you, so check the bottom of the laptop. There should be a couple of panels that can be unscrewed. The one you're looking for should be roughly 4" by 4 or 5". Open it up, and check the sticks of RAM. Is there one or two? They look like this:

Make sure your computer is off when you check/remove/replace RAM sticks.
If there are two RAM sticks, remove one, and then start it. Still freezes? Carefully replace the stick you removed MAKE SURE it is firmly reseated, and remove the other stick and reboot. This should do it. If it is starting normally, take the faulty stick of RAM into a computer repair or product shop, and ask for a stick of DDR2 laptop memory. Make sure it is the same size 1G, 512MB etc as the stick you removed, as RAM usually likes to be the matching amount with its friend.
If it has one RAM stick, remove it, take it to a computer shop, and buy the same size stick. It's easy to install yourself.
Hope this helped, any further problems, please let me know and I will be happy to help.
