I plugged in my Opal and the "MTP Media Device" option thing shows up, but when I go to "My Computer", "OPAL" does not appear. Not only that, but after a while, my Opal will disconnect and reconnect randomly. What's going on and how do I fix this?

My computer wont find my OPAL GEMLINE!!!Please HELP:(

is there a difference in the opperating systems on each of these computers?

if it is running windows xp it should be able to connect to the internet and download all necessary drivers needed for your device. one thing you can check is after connecting the mp3 player open up my computer from the start menu in the task bar and see if the removable storage device is detected at all.

Hung in a transfer loop after being removed from PC

When I (USB) plug in my RCA Opal M4002A mp3 player into my "Office PC" it works fine, but when I plug it into my "Studio PC" the "Opal" screen shows "USB connected" and so does the "PC" with the "Device Connected Sound" but then the "Mouse Pointer" changes to the "Hour Glass" you hear the "System Notification Sound" then the "Mouse Pointer" changes back to the default "Arrow Pointer" and this back and forth action loops endlessly until I unplug it. I've tried everything. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Quaal
*** ONLY THIS PART OF THE ABOVE MESSAGE IS MINE ***
ALSO I HAVE THE "RCA Opal M4002A" (2GB) mp3 player.
*** After much trial and error this FIXED my problem. ***
1 - First right mouse click on "My Computer".
2 - Left click on "Properties"- Left click on "Hardware"- Left click on "Device Manager".
3 - Now with one end of the USB cable plugged into your mp3 player, plug the other into your USB port. (Now when I did this a new "Portable Device" icon with an "MTP" Driver (sub icon) showed up in the "Devices List". (The "MTP" icon had an "!" on it, telling my it wasn't working properly. I then did this.
4 - Right click on "MTP" driver icon, then ...
5 - Left click on "Update Driver". (I was then given two choices. The top one was the faulty "Portable Device" driver which I had done everything I could to fix, but nothing worked. So I then did this ...
6 - Left click on the "Mass Storage" Driver (the second choice below it in the list), I then clicked "OK". The "Updating Driver" screen showed for a moment. The "Portable Device / MTP Driver(!)" icon vanished from the "Device Manager" devices list, But the looping STOPPED!!! My Opal was working beautifully and showing in my "Root Directory" as Drive j: and in "Device Manager" under "Disk Drives" as "Thomson Opal USB Device".
P.S. For some reason the file transfers are noticeably faster now. Good Luck, Quaal

RCA Opal M4008A

I had this problem.  Backing up data wasn't a concern though, as I hadn't anything on the OPAL yet.
First I let the OPAL charge up for 3 hours.  Then I made sure it was powered off.  I had previously downloaded onto a PC the firmware update for the M4004 which also works on the M4008 and other OPAL's.  I plugged the OPAL into the PC, and booted up the PC. After installing the firmware package in the PC, you get an install screen for the new firmware with a format option for the OPAL.  I selected that option, but the "start" button was greyed out as the PC still couldn;t see the OPAL.  I pressed the reset (paperclip in the back of the OPAL) for about 15 seconds, than held down the "Play" button and waited.  Eventually the software recognized the OPAL, and started to format it.
If you get a dialogue to restart the PC, press NO!  You have to read the instructions that come with the install. Eventually I reformatted the drive, and installed new firmware.
BTW, there was no picture folder after I did this, so I just created a new folder named picture and it worked fine for the thumbnail pics I threw in there.  Also when I use a MAC with the OPAL, I power the MAC up with the OPAL off but attached.  After drag and dropping files into the OPAL, I power down the MAC.  After power down the OPAL will after a pause give the "building databases please wait" messages, then when done go to the start menu.  It is difficult on a MAC to eject the OPAL, it just reappears on the desktop so shutting down is the only safe way to administer the device.  But to update firmware, which is easily corrupted BTW if you unplug the thing at the wrong time,  you HAVE to do it on a PC operating system. Might work on an Intel MAC with a PC OS though.
Hope this helps.

This is the BEST solution. I just had the same problem and ran across this solution and it actually worked. If you are experiencing this problem, this is the only fix I found and I have tried several. Solution #2 posted on Dec 30, 2007 4%20stars_w.png
