My Dyson DC 14 purple animal will not stand into the upright position and is not picking up dirt. It has not been picking up the last couple of times I vacuumed but thought it was my imagination. This morning I took the shield off the brush and cut out strings that were around it. I also removed the u-tube to see if it was clogged. All of it I put back and thought I put it back properly, but now it will not click into the upright position. The brush is working, and the vacuum is not picking up the dirt very well. Can you help me?
Hi,
Try this quick repair and see if this fixes your Dyson in terms of not going in the upright position: This is a frequent problem that we see come in on Dysons. If this doesn't fix it, please feel free to just use the clarification request and let me know this didn't fix it. The suction problem is happening because when the machine is put in the upright position it diverts the suction from the floor to the hose automatically, and it's probably stuck in between the lower part and the hose part.
Step 1.
Turn power off and unplug the machine.
Tilt the machine backward to a 45° angle.
Step 2.
Step 3.
In terms of the machine not picking up, this could be caused by a few things.
The first thing you should check is the filter. The DC14 has a motor filter that is recommended to be washed every 90 days. Here's how to access this filter:

*The post-motor filter located under the clear bin should last the lifetime of the machine and does not need to be washed.
There are two different types of filters that were used on the Dyson DC14, and One part filter, and a two part filter. Here's instructions on how to clean both of them:

Also, since you have removed the bottom plate, a common pDyson animal is giving me fits - 8b953d0.jpghe Dyson's is when this plate is reinstalled. It is very easy to put the plate on incorrectly, which prevents the brushes from hitting the carpeting. This can seriously decrease the pick up on carpets. Check the bottom plate to make sure that it was put back on properly. Here's pictures of both the correct, and incorrect way to reinstall the bottom plate:
Here's a picture of the WRONG way to install the bottom plate. Notice the gap in between the two housings:
Here's another picture, that is the RIGHT way to install the soleplate:
I would say probably 6 times out of 10 this is the problem with the customers machine. If you checked the soleplate and it is installed correctly, move on to the second possible problem.
I hope that this was helpful to you. Please feel free to use the Clarification Request form here on Fixya if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Chris J.
