GPS turns off unexpectedly

My Garmin 660 while in use, (plugged into adapter) will suddenly shut off. If you turn it back on, it will turn off within 30 sec. I have repeated this several times and the results are the same. Also, the battery life is noticeably shorter. After being charged overnight, if used the next day for a drive of less than an hour the battery will die. I have had the device for approx 2 years.

If your GPS is suddenly shut off check your device may be set to battery-saving mode. If you faced a battery issue, then replace the battery. Check out the replacement guide for more information on how to replace the battery.

After that, try plugging in the GPS to see if it will stay on. If that does not work, check if the cable is working. You can test this by trying out a different cable.

SOURCE: Won't turn on after first time

saw this on a different forum.....I got one for xmass.....hope it doesn't happen to me!!!!!!!!

I apologize for the inconvenience. After further research with our engineers, a problem has been discovered on your C550. A file has been created to stop the unit from turning off and locking up. Please download the new file from your computer to the unit. The file is attached to this email along with instructions on how to get the file into the unit.

The following procedure will update the software in your C550 series and correct the power issue you are experiencing with your Garmin C550 series

1.) Let the Garmin sit without power for at least 24-48 hours.

2.) Plug the C5xx series into the your computer (using a USB port in the back of the computer) with the cable provided with the unit.

3.) After removing the faceplate on the front of the Garmin press and release the reset button. At this time the C550 series will reset and power on.

4.) Save the attached file included in e-mail from Garmin Product Support. Save this file to the desk top on your computer. Note: This will make it easy to find.

5.) Open the My Computer window (by accessing the start menu on the bottom left of your computer screen).

6.) Locate and open the Garmin Mass Storage device.

7.) Locate the Garmin folder and open.

8.) Open the remoteSW folder.

9.) Copy the file that you have saved to the desktop and paste it into the remoteSW folder you have just opened. Make sure that none of the files contained within the remoteSW folder is highlighted, or you will not be able to save the new file.

10.) A message window will pop up asking you to confirm that you want to replace the file; Select Yes.

11.) Disconnect the C550 series from the USB cable and let the unit restart. A message will appear on the screen stating "Updating PLD Software".

Note: the screen will fade out and go blank during this process. Do not be alarmed, this is part of the update procedure, and the screen will return to normal within seconds.

You can't. Do you not remember your security location? As long as you take the unit back to this location, it will unlock. Otherwise, you'll have to send it in to Garmin with your original receipt to get it unlocked.

SOURCE: audio gone from my gps garmin nuvi 660

If you can hear audio through the headphone jack but not the internal speaker jack, then the speaker is bad.

This is a problem I have seen many times before. I will be posting an article soon on how to replace the internal speaker, however this is not a repair that just anyone can do.

You have to have skills in dissassembly & soldering.

SOURCE: garmin c340 gps freezes up

Avoid buying Garmin GPS. Their units have a non user replaceable battery that last about 2 years. After that, you have to send the unit to Garmin to replace the battery and be hit with at least $150 plus shipping. Possibly more if they need to fine tune something else. Look at other brands with easier battery replacement such as Sony, Navigon, etc. Garmin is a total rip off.

Garmin Nuvi 660 shut itself off and will not turn back on

Hi Sherry,

The unit should not get warm, unless the battery was fully discharged or maybe shorted out. Most likely a part has failed on the main board.

Please see this link about a Dead Nuvi:

Garmin nuvi does turn on when connected to power in car

Hi

I had the same problem. My Nuvi 350 did not power up for a couple of days. I suspected moisture to be the culprit. So I took my wife's hair dryer and blew hot air(in the intermediate setting) into the SD card slot in the GPS for a couple of minutes. Take care not to overheat the GPS or Screen.
Pronto my GPS powered up without any issues.
Hope this helps

Issues with new Garmin

Try pushing the reset button and charging again. If that doesn't work I think you've got a defective unit. Contact the seller and sendit back for a trade.
