Dell laser printer 1700 always has load/remove paper light on and I have to hit the button every time for anything to print. I used to get paper jams all the time but now I am not getting paper jams just have to hit the button all the time to print.

First I would remove the paper tray and check the rollers and print path for any scraps of paper that may be tripping up a sensor. If all seems well, ...
Try this next: It will reset the printer's configuration info. To factory reset your Dell 1700 series printer follow these steps.
Turn off your printer
Open the front cover (push the button on the left side)
Hold down the "Continue" and "Cancel" buttons and turn the power back on.
When the "Error LED" light on the control panel is solid, close the cover and release the "Continue" and "Cancel" buttons.
Tip: To print a configuration sheet push the "Continue" button twice. This will give your printers IP Address.
If you mean that the print cycle starts, but the "Paper Jam" lights up at the point where the paper starts to enter the drum, here's what I found worked.
The rollers that feed the paper come down onto the clean sheets on a plastic, spring-loaded arm Those rollers sometimes get too slick after a lot of use and they won't push the paper up and into the drum -- they slip like worn tires.
Solution: slip the rubber "tires"off the plastic roller "wheels" and reverse them, inside-out. Put them back on the wheels and the new rubber surface will probably push the paper just fine.
To do this you have to turn the machine upside down and remove the paper tray. I would unplug the unit and remove the drum as well before trying this.
Not an ideal solution, but, Dell printers were not desined with envelopes in mind. (I used to work there)
My solution, if you value your time at all, pick up an HP personal laser printer. Costs a little more, but the time saved will much outweigh the inital cost.
You CAN get the dell printer to work a few times maybe but consistently is not a possility....
I have taken the toner and the drum out to find a paper jam and could not find anything. I even turned the printer "off" and "on" and the "paper jam" light stays on. What can we do?
sure..it's in the printer control panel, under paper source. Open that up, and you'l lmost likely find that it's on a default. Also, do a print test page under admin, prior to doing any print jobs. http://www.kauaikeepsakes.com/computerguy/

Just in case you don't know where the rollers are in the paper cassette...remove the paper cassette drawer and he rollers are at the top of the entrance to the drawer. There are two rollers, grasp one between your fingers and gentle pull the roller down to see the mechanism better. Rotate both rollers and you may find a build up of dirt/grime on either or both. Simple clean them with an appropriate wet cleaner & lint free cloth.
