My sportster 5 starting turning off when on periodically. It would happen pretty frequently until it no longer will turn on... I assume it is a short of some kind.

SOURCE: power supply to Sirius Radio

yes, some sirius radios work on 5 volts, and some work on 12 volts. Your sportster replay is a 5 volt unit. If you trace that wire back, you will find a cigarette lighter plug with a transformer built into it, with either wires soldered to the terminals, or a female cig plug wired up behind the dash. Whatever sirius unit you plan on hooking up, I strongly reccommend using the transformer that it came with......however if you're willing to take a chance, it's most likely 5 volts.

SOURCE: sirius sportster sp-tk1, always displays "acquiring signal"

Same problem in RI too. Acquiring signal stays on the screen 24/7. My husband has the same Sportster. When I plug his into my car docking station, it works fine. When I plug mine in, it says "Acquiring signal". Does this mean my radio is dead?

SOURCE: Sportster randomly turns off.

I too started experiencing drop-out/unit lock-ups after two months.  After resetting to factory defaults, per Sirius phone support, without results, only pulling out power adapter would reset the unit.  I suspected a design problem with heat.  I wrapped the unit with a medical cold pack and got stable operation.  Given all the complaints I see on this web site, I suspect Sirius is well aware of the issue, and not addressing it appropriately.

SOURCE: SIRIUS Sportster "Acquiring Signal"

Let me save you $30.00. A new antenna will not help, nor will cleaning the contacts. I just did both of those and it did not help. I have mine in the freezer right now cooling it down. Sirius told me that I should not leave it in the car because it gets to hot. They told me to buy another unit....

Sportster 5 turns on and off randomly every few seconds hooked to a dock.

Sportster units get very hot ! If you use it in the boombox stop ! Take the radio unit out - remove the silver cover from the boombox ( don't overlook the 2 hidden screws under the speaker grills ) take a dremel tool with a cutting wheel - and cut all the shrouding away around the top of the reciever. This will allow the radio to run way cooler ! I also drilled several holes thru the swivel mount to allow better air-flow !

Sportster does not work

The issue will have to be the sportster unit. It would be too much of a coincidence for bothe the car cradle and Boom-Box to have something wrong with them. I have seen this before...most of the time, the connections on the sportster will have a bad solder joint. This will cause it to turn on and off intermittently. You can confirm this by wiggling the unit when it is docked and getting it to turn on and off. This is not something that would be easy to repair as you will want an electronics repair to fix. The Sportster comes with a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer, so if it is covered, then you can get a new tuner and apply your old subscription to the new one.

Sportster randomly turns off.

Remove the batteries from the boombox. If there is no batteries in the boombox, and it still does this, then the boombox itself is no longer any good.

Power but no signal

I work for sirius so I know about all of these different issues and the most common one is the connections. It is imperative that the radios be connected to power with the cig lighter adapter. This adapter had circuitry in it that lowers the cars 12 volts to 5 volts which the sirius unit ooerates on. The old units were 12 volt and could hard wired into the vehicles fuse block, but all of the new radios operate on 5 volts. If this is not the issue with either of you then you have defective units. Being that all warranty replacement are with remanufactured units, your chance of getting a problematic unit increases after the initial return of your new unit.

Sportster 4 not working...

I had the same issue. This is what Sirius calls a "Frozen Unit". There is no bypass, unfortunately, and it must be returned.

I had mine for 3 days and it froze on the Sirius Logo screen when booting up. If you bought the unit from Sirius, you must contact their E-Commerce department. If bought from a retailer, take it back to the store.

Sorry, mate.

Sirius Sportster

Unfortunately this is a fairly common problem in the Sportster, caused by worn contacts in the tuner. Sometimes you can temporarily resolve the problem by wedging a thin piece of cardboard behind the tuner in the cradle, to create a better contact; but eventually it will just wear out again.
