Ice tray sometimes stuck when dumping off ice

The ice tray in my LG fridge usually turn sideway to dump off the ice into the ice bin when ice is ready and then water is filled into the tray again. The problem is the ice tray remain in the bent position rather than retract itself into the horizontal posisition after dumping off all the ice. It looks as if the tray is stuck twisted sideway on one end and stay horizontal on the other end. This caused water to spray over into the ice bin and sometime all over the other part of the freezer compartment. The bottom of the ice bin is frozen stiff and I have to thaw out the tray everyday. Is there something to look for in the ice tray to fix this? how does it actually work? Thanks in advance. Have LG fridge and seems like the ice is either melting and freezing together or dripping water from ice tray. I thought the same thing with the tray letting water fall into the bin, but I have taken the cover off and noticed the water is not dripping into bin. ?Freezer not cold enough. Any other thoughts.

My situation is some what the same. The ice maker was not making ice and the freezer was not freezing. I noticed ice buildup coming from behind the freezer light. So I took the light cover and the cover for the element off and discovered ice had built up from the top of the element to almost the ice maker. The only obvious place for water to do this is from the ice maker As we do use the ice, for the most part the compartment stays really full. So I believe now that it was trying to turn and dispense the ice and either could not and returned up full and the water then dispensed. But as much ice that had built up it took a lot of water and time and did it with us using ice and the freezer working fine. So after removing the ice buildup and starting over the freezer is still not working properly, but the ice maker is making ice with no leaks, but I am noticing ice forming on the water dispensing tube (like a ice sickle). So I guess I have both problems.

how do you replace the tray?

  • Anonymous Mar 18, 2014

Have a drip coming from icemaker. It then accumulates in the tray and creates an ice blob

Just FYI... There is also a small push button switch on the bottom of the right side where the motor is that turns the cube tray. Push it and it will cycle the tray to empty ice then return and fill with water.

Your icemaker tray has an update for the water flowing over the tray.  You will need to call a qualified LG technician to get it replaced.  Also, the tray is twisted because it binds itself against the hinge pin on the left side.  To stop this, spray some cooking spray oil in the left hinge pin and it should unbind itself and return to normal.

The cooking spray worked immediately! Thank you!

Lfx25978st ice tray stuck

This sounds like a thermostat in the ice maker has failed. Unfortunately, LG provides no replacement parts for the ice maker. They say to just replace the assembly, so there is no alternative other than ice maker replacement. Here is the ice maker to order.

My LRSC26923TT side by side fridge/freezer has stopped making ice. It still dispenses water but it would not dump the last tray produced. I removed the cubes from the tray by hand, emptied the freezer, and...

Unfortunately, Ice Makers are notoriously unreliable and most require more expertise than a handyman possesses. Most require replacement of one of the 4 main parts (usually not generic): drive motor, water solenoid, heating release element or bin full ice arm control switch.
A Certified Technician should be able to diagnose the problem and suggest a repair or replacement.

Ice maker problem

Clear the Ice tray by pressing the button under the ice maker. The problem is that the ice is in the first couple of slots is not dumping and the tray tries to fill again and over flows. I pressed the button and cleared the tray of ice (This will tilt the tray and twist it to empty it) that was re-frozen several times without dumping. My ice maker works perfectly after I did the above. I think the problem arises if the door did not close completely. I stopped hanging the dish cloth on the door and on my LG Dish wisher. I hope this helps

LG SXS Refrigerator LSC26905 ice maker

I was able to order the ice tray myself and install it in the fridge - it's not hard. I ordered from one of the parts sellers linked to at the LG website, not those listed in other posts here.

Here's how to replace the tray:

You need to remove the tray dumping mechanism to do this.
  1. Remove the ice bin, set it aside (don't forget to deal with the ice melt).
  2. Turn the ice maker off (LG says to unplug the fridge, I didn't).
  3. On the left hand side of the ice tray dumping mechanism there is a screw helping to keep the entire thing suspended from the ceiling of the freezer. Remove that screw- don't worry, the mechanism will stay put for now.
  4. The dumping mechanism can now slide forward- note that you can't completely remove it from the freezer yet, but slide it forward and it will no longer be suspended from the ceiling. Don't let it drop or hang.
  5. You need to disconnect its power supply now. On the left hand side you should see a small bundle of wires coming from the back of the freezer to the dumping mechanism. It connects to the dumping mechanism's set of wires with a pair of white plugs. Pull these plugs apart. You may need to pry the catch on these plugs apart while you pull.
  6. Now you can take the dumping mechanism out of the freezer (and close your freezer).
  7. To remove the ice tray you need to slide the housing that contains the rotating motor out of the housing. This is on the right side of the mechanism. If you have trouble identifying it look at the underside of the entire thing and you'll see a small "test" button. That button is on the motor.
  8. To remove the motor you'll see two catches on the right side- you'll need to pull these catches out without breaking anything. You'll be able to slide the motor down and out when you get it right.
  9. Sliding the motor out lets you get the old ice tray out now. There is probably a set of white wires routed through a little catch on the old ice tray that you'll need to free.
  10. Put the new ice tray back on the motor. You'll need to get the left side secured at the same time you get the motor housing in its catches of the dumping mechanism.
  11. Reroute those white wires back on the new ice tray.
  12. Reconnect the electric wires to the housing.
  13. Slide the entire dumping housing back onto the ceiling of the freezer and screw in on the left side.
That's it. You can press that test button on the underside of the motor. This will dump the tray and immediately refill it with water so you can observe if everything is working.

Ice tray sometimes stuck when dumping off ice

I had the same problem. I did the following and it now works great. The ice tray has a square tab on the rear leftside. As the tray rotates to dump the ice, the tab runs on a curved section of the the ice maker frame. The curved section becomes rough with use and causes the tray to stick when it is returning to the fill position. I carefully sanded the curved section of the frame to smooth it out. No problems since.
One does have to dismantle the ice maker to effect this repair.
