TV has lost power

I was watching a program and fell asleep. When I woke up the cable & sound were still on, but the TV screen was black. I'm unable to turn the TV on. There is no indicator light on the front of the TV. Have checked the outlet which is fine. Could it be the power cord? Where do I get a new one of those?

From experience, it is more likely to be a fault with the power supply in the TV - the only way to determine this is with another set that you know to be working right now.

Judging by the query raised, the power supply in your set might have "taken a dramatic dump" as they say; i.e. failed completely - no standby LED, no other signs of life at all. These can die anytime without warning. Depending on the age, model, brand and type of set you have, replacement parts may or may not be available and if any are, the repair could prove expensive.

In the meantime, with TV unplugged, you can do a simple continuity check on its power cord with an ohmmeter (or multimeter on diode check if you have one or are able to borrow one - the device may or may not have a beep function indicating good continuity or shorts) - if it reads 0.00 and/or beeps your cord is intact and not the problem, then you will be able to rule it out as a cause.

I also recommend you examine the power supply in the set as well - look for burned or sorry parts and so on. If it looks like it's going to be too hard, consult a service center for further advice.

If you have sound its not the power cord, try removing power to the set for a few mins then plug it back in and see if that helps

Had the same problem, it is a problem with a surge in the motherboard...mostly from the TV overheating.

SOURCE: Black Screen but sound works

Any part in your set can be replaced. It is a question of cost, and the qualifications of the service person. For this set it is important that only the manufacture service rep work on it. There are specialized tools, training, and setups for performing service on this type of set.

A poping sound is caused by a component actualy rapidly blowing! This should be looked after. Using the set can only create more problems. Components rapidly blow because of a catastrophic short or over-voltage condition of some type.

The manufacture service rep can do a visual inspection of all the circuit boards, and replace the board with the one that shows signs of physical damage. He will then run diagnostics, and perform the proper troubleshooting to find the cause of the problem and replace any other defective parts or circuit boards.

The repairs on these TV sets can be rather expensive. Ask for an estimate before approving any work done. When buying any of these TV sets it is best to take an extended warranty. This is an insurance in case of an expensive failure.

From your description, I would suspect a section of a power supply has failed, and possibly a failure in one of the main driver circuits. This type of repair will not normaly be low in cost.

SOURCE: Won't Power-Up

Thanks MattKC for the solution! I just fixed mine too. I was able to find some links to some replacement power boards across the 'net, for about $45 including shipping...

But then I got bold (and since the monitor was given to me b/c it didn't work) and decided to try the fix myself. Went to Mouser Electronics (www.mouser.com) and spent $10.50 including shipping (I don't know of any good local component suppliers around me, and RadioShack just doesn't have jack anymore), and just replaced them myself. There was one that I didn't replace (22uF, 50V cap) because it was real close to a lot of surface mount components, and my soldering skills are not all that great, so I didn't want to chance it... Replaced all the rest though, and ta da, now it powers up just fine!

This solution worked for me. Thanks!

SOURCE: screen black - power to tv is good.

Since the set is only 8months old, it should still be under warranty. Please contact the manufacturer for directions on how and where to get this serviced. This should be fixed at no cost to you.
