Drill chuck is frozen

Most drills have a chuck that screws on to a threaded shaft that extends inside the motor. Repair shops know how to "freeze" that shaft so it will not turn, allowing you to unscrew the chuck. One model of drill has a tiny hole that you insert a nail into to remove the chuck.

Chuck the handle of the chuck key in the chuck.Find a drill bit that fits in one of holes that the chuck key fits in.Then use a flat screw driver to lever off of the drill bit and the teeth to tighten the chuck .Use a towel and hold the drill motor,be careful not to squeeze to tight just enough to hold the drill from moving.Use a harmer and strike the chuck key and that should loosen the chuck.A 1/4 inch chuck key will work as well.If this is a key less chuck then use a small pipe wrench and hammer on the back part of the chuck with the handle left as you look at the drill.Good Luck & Thank You for choosing FixYa.com.

If your Makita matches the one on the picture, you will need a chuck key to attach a drill bit or tool to the machine's chuck. The chuck key inserts to any of the small holes in the front part of the chuck and at the same time its teeth interlocks with the teeth of the chuck. When turning the chuck key you will widen or loosen the grip of the three jaw pieces, that clamps to your tool or bit. Tighten the chuck key by hand until the chuck grips the bit securely. For safety, unplug the power cord whenever operating the chuck key on the chuck.

The chuck will not turn. So to loosen just turn the black plastic counter clockwise. The chuck will loosen. Or you can hold the black part on the chuck tight and put the drill in reverse and slowly squeeze the trigger and the chuck will loosen also. Do the opposite to put a new bit in. Put the drill in forward and hold the black part of the chuck and squeeze the trigger with the bit in place and it will tighten down on the bit.

Typically, the end of the drill where the bit is inserted (called the 'chuck') rotates to loosen or tighten the arms holding the bit in place. Grasp the top of the drill with one hand and rotate the end the bit is inserted into counter-clockwise if the bit end is pointed towards you to loosen the arms and release the bit.

If it is an older drill it may have a 'key' that would look similar to end of a phillips screwdriver on a tee that can be inserted into where the chuck and the rest of the drill assembly meet and twisted to loosen the bit.

If neither of these work post what type of drill you are using as not all hand drills are the same. Hope this helps.

I have the same drill and love it !! This series of Craftsman Drills are the first of the keyless chuck. To tighten or loosen the bit, simply pull back on the black ring tightly and hold it and simultaneously pull trigger to run drill foreward (to tighten bit). Reverse (to loosen bit). The chuck will make a loud clicking sound!! This is normal !

When the drill bit on a hammer drill keeps loosening up one of two things is happening. 1. The chuck is worn out and needs to be replaced. 2. The chuck is not tight enough before you start drilling. If you have the style of chuck that requires a key do not be bashful about using maximum force to tighten the chuck and move the chuck key from hole to hole and tighten it in each position. Joe

Use of both is the same:
- loosen "chuck" (part where bit is installed).
- insert bit (hand tighen chuck so that bit is secured)
- tighten chuck securely with chuck tool, or by holding rotating chuck with hand and pulling trigger (GENTLY or you will shave off skin!)
- put drill in forward or reverse mode and pull trigger to inser or remove screw / drill hole.

ensure that battery is charged on cordless drilll.
squeeze connectors to remove and place in charger when battery is too low to operate drill.

Loosen drill chuck, insert flat end into chuck and tighten.....go drill some holes!

Chucks ARE meant to stay tight.
You also use drill to UNSCREW THINGS.
