The ADF unit is the grey paper tray located on the top of the scanner unit. Check the following points if it does not feed paper, or you receive an "ADF jam" error message:
Check the position of the ADFdocument guide:
Lift up the ADF unit. Locate the document guide on the underside, as shown here:
The document guide should be tucked in behind the grey plastic casing, but a paper jam can push it out of position. Figure 8 below shows the correct (1) and incorrect (2) positions:
If your document guide looks like example (2) on the right, lift it out on the right-hand side. Tuck it in behind the grey section, so that it matches the example on the left (1).
Close the scanner unit.
If the printer is displaying "ADF Jam, press start to continue", press the B/W Start button to clear the error:
Test the printer by scanning or faxing via the ADF unit.
Check the ADFedge guides:
The adjustable paper tray edge guides must be set to the correct paper size for the paper you are loading. Otherwise, the paper may skew, misfeed and/or jam.
Slide the edge guides to enclose the loaded paper (in the direction of the yellow arrows below), without causing it to bunch or crease. The paper should be aligned with the relevant paper size marker:
Figure 9. The ADF edge guides.
Check the ADF unit feed rollers:
Open the cover of the ADF by pulling up the grey lip, as shown below:
Check thoroughly for fragments of paper and foreign objects. Take care not to tear any jammed paper when you remove it.
Use the green gear (circled in yellow below) to turn the paper feed rollers and feed through jammed paper:
Paper dust or foreign material on the rollers may cause paper to misfeed. Clean these parts with a damp, well-wrung cloth:
The upper paper pickup rollers (circled in red, above top left). You can turn these by hand.
The lower paper pickup rollers. These will rotate as you turn the green gear (circled in yellow above). See the inset for a close-up of the lower rollers.
When complete, close all the covers.
If the printer is displaying "ADF Jam, press start to continue", press the B/W Start button to clear the error:
Test the printer by scanning or faxing via the ADF unit.
Check that the ADF unit sensors are not obstructed.
Open the cover of the ADF unit.
Look at Figure 12 below. Check the position of the black plastic parts (the actuators) circled in red.
If the black plastic actuators do not stick out from the ADF cover, they may have been pushed out of position by a paper misfeed and be obscuring the ADF sensors. Tap the back of the ADF unit firmly to release the actuators.
When complete, close all the covers. Check and test the printer as explained in Step 6.d.vi.
Follow the instructions below to install the print cartridges for the first time.
Installing print cartridgesStep one: Install the print cartridges
Follow these steps to install the cartridges.

Figure 2: Remove tape from cartridge1 - Copper-colored contacts2 - Plastic tape with pink pull tab (must be removed before installing)3 - Ink nozzles under tape
CAUTION:
Do not touch the cartridge ink nozzles or copper contacts. Touching these parts will result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.Do not remove the copper strips. They are required electrical contacts.
Figure 3: Do not touch the ink nozzles or copper contacts.
Slide each new cartridge forward into the empty slot. Then gently push theupper part of the cartridge forward until it clicks into place.
Insert the tri-color cartridge into the left slot.
Insert the black cartridge into the right slot.
Figure 4: Insert the cartridge
Close the cartridge door.
Step two: : Align the print cartridge
The product prompts you to align cartridges every time you install a cartridge. You can also align the cartridges at any time from the control panel, or byusing the software you install with the product. Aligning the cartridgesensures high quality output.
Make sure you have letter or A4 unused plain white paper loaded in the input tray.
Press OK. The product prints an alignment page.
Place the alignment page print-side down on the scanner glass.
Press OK to scan the alignment page. When the scan finishes, the alignment is complete.
NOTE:
If you have colored paper loaded in the input tray when you align the cartridges, the alignment will fail. Load unused plain white paper into the inputtray, and then try the alignment again.
Hello, The plastic piece you are talking about it just prevents the paper from bending forward when is inserted in the printer. That plastic piece should not cause any paper jams or printing problems. If you do happen to have paper jams maybe a piece of plastic fell inside where the paper goes. Simply turn off the printer, remove the paper and flip the printer upside down and shake it a little that should remove any debris inside the printer.
I had a similar problem on an hp-3052. I was getting pieces of plastic that were grey and yellow stuck to my pages and all inside the printer then papaer stared jamming. The problem was the fuser sleve which can be picked up on ebay fairly cheap. The bigger problem is installing the sleve over the fuser. I tried the repair my self and broke the fuser assembly. It's a cheap part but a pro should do the install this is definately not a diy fix.
There is a plastic post inside that a spring connects to that probably broke off, it is part of the plastic frame.
what I do to fix that install a screw thru the rear frame and attach the spring to the screw.
If you open the clamshell like you are removing a jam or replacing the toner cartridge. You'll see a black sponge roller on the bottom of the machine, just to the right all the way in the back you'll a metal plate with white gears inside it that is what the spring is connected to. If you press down on the gear, you'll feel the spring tension if it is still connected.
It is a very common problem for that model
there is a little sensor flag which you probably knocked out of place. Remove the tray to gain access (plastic guides have a little stop. Just use a small flat blade screw driver and gently pry between steel guide and plastic guide to create a little more gap so the cassette tray comes off the guides completely.
Next, look in there and you will see a sensor flat which is supposed to dangle freely to make contact with the paper. It is a paper full sensor flag. If it isn't broke, you should be able to clip it back in its saddles.
