SOURCE: dryer banging

Check the vibration damper rods. It is detecting an uneven load and stopping.

When my speed queen starts a low quick banging noise is heard. tried low loads but same noise

A Speed Queen top-load washer making a banging sound at the beginning of the cycle could be a sign of a few problems. You could examine the following:
  • Size of load: Check to see that you are not overfilling the washer. The water and clothes should be about 3/4 full in the washer. Overloading the washer can result in the drum becoming unbalanced and making banging sounds.
  • Leveling: Verify that the washer is level. If not, reposition the washer's feet until it is level. A washer that is out of balance can also make banging sounds.
  • Spring elements: Examine the suspension springs at the drum's top. The drum may slam against the washer's sides if one of them has broken or come loose.
  • Motor: The motor might be the source of the banging sound. The washer may vibrate and make banging sounds if the motor is loose or damaged.

Tub is making very loud banging noise

There could be an unbalanced load of laundry being washed or the drum bearings are loose and need to be tighten or the filter is blocked in your washing machine.

I have just moved my asks w 6551 to a new house and now it's making a banging sound when the drum turns. Is this serious?

Those machines come with shipping bolts that hold the drum to the frame when it is shipped. This ensures that nothing gets slammed around when it is moved. Without those in place, there is a chance that the shock absorbers and springs that align the drum when it is on CAN COME loose and then you have a banging noise when the drum spins.

Drum makes loud banging noise.

Maybe the heat in your dryer over time has melted weak glue and loose components are hitting against the drum

Washing machine was making a loud banging/tapping niose when the drum was spinning. It doesn't sound too good when turned manually. Is it the bearings and are they easy to fix?

banging may happen due to low load also, as cloths form a ball shape at one place.
otherwise it might be bearing or bearing housing. bearings are very difficult to replace as whole drum need to open. if bearing housing got loose in drum then drum needs replacement, also very costly.

Loud banging

Several possibilities for noise. check concrete balance wieghts at top and bottom of washer, make sure they are not loose.
Check drum restraint spring(s) are not broken.
Check suspension legs for wear.
Check for loose motor fixings.
Finally, remove drum belt, and spin drum by hand, tjhere should be noise from bearings, if it feels rough or is rumbling , then main bearings have failed.

Thanks.

Whirlpool Duet Sport Washer Banging During Spin Cycle

If the the drum feels loose in any way, there are three possible reasons:
1. The pulley nut has come loose. (easily repairable from the rear)
2. The bearing is bad (part of the rear tub).
3. The spinner has come loose from the basket (what you describe)

In cases 2 and 3, the entire drum/tub assembly will have to be removed, disassembled and repaired/replaced.

Check your owners manual for possible limited warranty. Contact Whirlpool for potential warranty repair concessions for case 3 if not covered under limited warranty.
