The time and chimes are out of sync for our tempus fugit wall clock by 4 chimes does any know how to adjust it

  • Anonymous Mar 22, 2014

I have a Tempus Fugit wall clovk that has Citizen Quartz on the face. (Roman numerals) The unit is run by battery. The pendulum moves and i can hear a ticking as normal, but the hands are not moving. Neither of the hands are obstructed. I can adjust the time with the dial on the battery pack/movement box, but that's where it stays, even though the pendulum is swinging and the clock is ticking. It's a beautiful unit, but would love to know how to sort this problem. Cheers Rob.

Turn the minute hand until the 16 westminster chime operate and then the hour strikes. Remove the minute hand and simple put it back on at the 12 o-clock position. The chimes should now be in sync.

I have a Tempus Fugit grandfather clock - it is chain driven. How can I stop the chimes at night only without stopping the time.

Tempus Fugit isn't a brand but is a little bit of whimsy from a manufacturer who might have produced the clock from generic bought-in parts which is pretty much what folk have been doing all along.
The clock movement would be produced by one company or individual and it would be placed in a cabinet made by somebody else. Traditionally the face or dial would be another mass-produced item that would be engraved with the name of the supplying jeweller or clock maker.

Tempus Fugit or "Time Flies" would seem to be an alternative or an addition to the name of the retailer. Your clock movement might be good quality or not so good and you would need an experienced horologist to give an opinion. Some clock movements have a lever to stop the chimes for night-time. A quality movement would have a lever that will stop the chimes and the quarter hour striking and reduce the volume of the hour strike, unfortunately the lever is often out of sight and you need to move it blind - if there is a lever.

Alternatively a felt sock over the striker - if you can reach it...

How to start my tempus fugit grandmother clock?

If the weights are all the way at the bottom you need to lift them back up as you pull the chains down one weight at a time. Then just start the pendulum swinging.

Is there a way to turn the chime off?

It depends on what type of movement you have, not all clocks have the silent option. If it does it will have a silent or chime lever on the front of the dial or it will have a small hole marked silent or chime (on the dial again). If it has the hole you will need a small key to turn it.

How to get my Tempus fugit grandfather clock to stop chimmimg

Unless it has a lever on the dial that allows you to switch it to silent you can not.

I want to know how to set the time on a tall grandfather clock. It has a key but I do not know how to set it and I do not want to miss it up. On the front of the clock it says Tempus Fugit Barwick. I...

I have 2 GF clocks....
To set the time, first be sure the clock is wound (weights are in the up position). Next, be sure that the pendulum is operating.... The "click, click" sound should be spaced about evenly. If not, then change the height adjustment of the feet to make the clock level...then the click will even out. Next, using only your finger, gently move the minute hand in a CLOCKWISE direction until you have set the time. You MAY wish to allow the chimes to sound at each quarter or half hour mark as you rotate the minute hand - but it is not necessary. Just keep rotating the minute hand - and the sounders will catch up and chime correctly.
