Unable to access internet through DLink DI-524 wireless modem

I am unable to make wireless DLink modem DI-524 talk to the cable modem(Scientific Atlanta). I have tried various things like resetting cable/wireless modem, different encryption standards, etc. None of the options seem to be working. Can any of you guys came across the similar problem or know the root cause? thanks in advance.

That is an extremely old ROUTER and has been discontinued for almost 10 years now. Does the modem provided, the scientific Atlanta, have WiFi? Are you trying to use the Dl524 to extend this WiFi? If thatā€™s the case, it will not work. DLink will only extent other DLink WIFI devices.

If youā€™re trying to use this router because the Scientific Atlanta does not have WiFi, ensure your Ethernet from the modem is connected into the proper data port for the router.

You can reset the router by taking a pen and holding the reset butting, unplugging the router (while holding the button, wait about 20 seconds, and plug the router in, then release the button. This will completely reset the router to defaults.

The routers default setup address is either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Use the setup wizard. If it still doesnā€™t work, itā€™s not a compatibility issue, the router has probably given up the ghost due to its age.

SOURCE: WEP Encryption

It is recommended to enable encryption on your wireless router before your wireless network adapters. Please establish wireless connectivity before enabling encryption. Note: Your network will slow down and wireless signal may degrade when enabling encryption due to the added overhead. Step 1 Log into the web configuration of the router by opening up a web browser and typing in the IP address of the router (192.168.0.1). Step 2 Enter your username (admin) and your password (blank by default). Click OK . Click the Home tab and click the Wireless button on the left hand side of the screen. Step 3 Select Enable next to the WEP radio buttons. For WEP encryption select 64, 128, or 256-bit encryption. For the Key type select HEX. If you have an option for Authentication type, select Shared Key. Step 4 Select Key 1. Enter a Hex encryption key that you make up. The length of the encryption key will depend on what you selected under WEP Encryption. 64-bit encryption 10 characters 128-bit encryption 26 characters 256-bit encryption 58 characters (available on DI-614+ only) The encryption key is HEX, meaning 0-9 and A-F are valid characters. For example, A4583DFF1A (64-bit HEX key). Step 5 Click on the Apply button then click on the Continue button to save your settings. Note: If using non-D-Link adapters, please refer to the manufacturerĀ“s documentation on enabling encryption.

SOURCE: Dlink DI 524 failed firmware update

You need to hold in the button on the back with a pen for 10-15 seconds, and then release to set the router back to its factory settings -- then try the update again.

SOURCE: DI-524 status led not blinking

Here are the instructions

  1. Make sure that you have a copy of the latest firmware and it has an *.exe file with it. Because the router's configuration page won't be available, you'll be needing the exe to some sort of force the firmware upgrade procedure.
  2. Unplug everything attached to your router except the power cable and LAN cable connected to your pc.
  3. Configure your TCP/IP with this info: IP:192.168.123.253, Default mask:255.255.255.0, Default Gateway:192.168.123.254 and DNS Server:192.168.123.254 (Use only 1 DNS server). Save this new configuration and reboot your pc.
  4. Unplug the power cable to your router as the pc reboots. When everything is up and running, plug the power cable. The status led will be flashing like crazy. It's normal.
  5. Use the exe file to upgrade your firmware. Make sure that the utility file (exe file) is able to recognize your router or else you won't be able to do a firmware upgrade. Now this may take a while, keep pressing the Refresh button to recognize your router. Once recognized you would see there 192.168.0.1 crash. Once you have this, you can now press the upgrade button.
  6. Wait for a while until the unit finishes the upgrade and once done, I think you have recovered the life of your router from the pits of hell. Hahahaha.
  7. You can now unplug the power of the router and restart your pc, see if everything is doing fine.
Hope this helps.

I have a d link d1 514 router. I'm unable to open 192.168.0.1. if i put the internet connection wire in LAN then I'm able to get internet access using cable but if i put the wire in wan, I'm not getting...

carry out the resetting of the dlink router
then use lan cable to gain access to dlink router,
set up the internet conenction (i.e. your internet provider modem plugged into the dlink router also)

if it has a built in wizard then just follow the on screen instructions

you will need to define SSID (wireless network name) and passkey (password for the wireless connection)

and the your done. disconnect the laptop from wired connection and connect via wireless

Wireless is nonexistant

You need to bridge mode your modem. And when set it to bridge mode already. Connect the dlink router. Access the gui of the router. Enter there your username and password. Powercycle modem, router and computer. Check connections. I f this didnt work, set again your modem to default, connect your router. Configure your router with username and password. Powercycle again. Check if it is working.

I just conected my DI-524 with a new cable modem

The first question is whether your change of service provider really has any connection with your new lack of range. If your new cable modem contains a wireless router, it's possible it is interfering with your old router. You only need one, so in that case you should remove your DLink and configure your wireless cable router to your satisfaction. Otherwise, you may have coincidentally picked up a new source of interference; you may want to change the channel on your DLink router to see if that improves your range. The third possibility is that your DLink radio is going sour with age -- it happens -- and may simply need replacement.

Connecting with internet

Yes, that is possible since you have a wireless router. Router can share internet connection. Go to this link this will help you setup the wireless connection (secure it if you want)

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/wireless/Dlink/DI-524/wireless.htm then on the very bottom there is an option how to Configure Windows XP to connect to your wireless network.

I suggest this because it would be better if there is encryption on the network so people wont be able to access your internet for free (unless you give them the security key)

No wan light

If no wan light bypass the dlink router and check if ethernet cable connected to wan port is working. Once you are able to go online through modem connect cable to WAN if light does not go on log into oruter and clone mac address and save settings. If doesnt work powercycle router and turn modem on first then router next if doesnt work upload latest firmware.

Connect to wireless D-Link and Westell6100

I am assuming that you have a functional LAN cable connecting the Westell and the DI 524, right? If you are unsure, replace it with a cable you know is good.

If the 524 is turned on downstream of the Westell modem, it should find what it wants. You may try rebooting the Westell and seeing if the 524 finds it, and you maybe should reboot the 524.

Sometimes, when the world gets jiggered up I have to work pretty hard to get my DI-524 resync'd to my DSL modem.
