If it takes and accepts the disc but will not play it is either a mechanical issue (table not spinning the disc) or if not reading disc it is likely a dirty or bad optical pickup in the unit---
One of the problems with many DVD players is as they get older the spindle motor is unable to overcome the inertia of the spindle + the disc.
If this is the case the read head will try to hunt for the start of the DVD if it is not spinning then it wont be able to find the DVD. If you can access the DVD by taking the cover off you can give the DVD a chance to spin by giving it a little push if the player can find the DVD then you can watch the movie.
If this is the case you will need a new spindle motor fitting to your player.
the laser eye (lens) is dirty, weak or defective. The unit no longer can sense that a disc is present and therefore will not initiate servo motor engagement. Pls try cleaning;
the spindle motor is weak or defective. This might be of additional information.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
Some suggestions
assuming you know you're using good discs, and have this problem with more then 1 disc. In anything that requires you to open the player and play around in it, I also assume you're not too akward with electronics, and out of warranty:
spindle motor problems - you could either fix that by changing the motor, or occasionaly by dropping a little bit of 3 in 1 oil on the shaft.
Just dont start it as a hobby if you can still go complain at the store...
Good luck
