I need to use my airmate compressor to paint. How do I get the pressure down to 40 psi that the gun says it operates at.

The brand of the spray gun doesn't matter ,
there is a low pressure gun it use between 25-45 PSI
of pressure and the high [russure spray gun it use 90 PSI
if you using Gravity gun ..you can use about the same amount for the low pressure gun 25-45 PSI,
Sory the gravity gun is the ones that have the canister in top the gun not bellow .(HVLP) High volume Low Pressure

It depends on what kind of spray gun you have. If you have a HVLP gun the pressure doesn't have to be as high, but you need a compressor that will keep up. The pressure is usually pretty low on these guns, about 15 PSI or less. The paint manufacture will usually give you a recommended pressure to paint their paint. A normal (old style) suction type gun takes more pressure, about 50 PSI. If you are asking this to decide on a compressor size, you will find that a one horse motor on a two cylinder compressor will not keep up. The newer supposedly five horsepower compressor will not keep up consistant pressure either. You need a five horsepower that runs on 220 and driving a belt driven two cylinder compressor minimum. You can get by on less, but have to wait half way during a coat on a car to wait on the compressor to catch up. This may be o.k. if you are just going to paint one car, but if you are looking to do this consistantly, then I would get a five horsepower motor on a two stage compressor. Make sure you drain the air tank of water and use a good air filter to remove moisture from the air before trying to paint. Hope some of this helps you.

These guns are made to use about 35 - 45 lbs psi and the paint needs to be thinned a bit. You will have to experiment with the thinning for how much coverage, how much humidity, what type of paint and thinner it takes.

How does it spray if you dump the paint out and put paint thinner in the cup? If it sprays paint thinnner, but not the paint, your paint is too thick. Thin it down by 25% and try a little. Keep adding thinner until the paint sprays out of the gun in an acceptable manner. Your gun probably has a 1.1,or 1.4 fluid tip. this is for spraying lacquers or automotive paints that are very thin. to spray oil based paint, your would need a 2.0 or 2.5 or bigger. not really what this gun was made to spray.

2 gallons is small to begin with u need to buy an in line pressure adjuster/regulator their a few bucks and can be attached to the paint gun or line and will keep the pressure at ur adjustment the regulator on the tank sets the tank pressure at 50 so when u us it will let it drop down to about 45 than start up to build the pressure up to 50 than shuts off than repeats it self the inline keeps pressure steady even if tanks are at 200 psi

1.Disconnect the air compressor from the dental tool air supply. Pressure and air supply rate-of-flow settings are different for air brush painting than for air delivery for dental tools.
2.Reset the air pressure on the tank to a range between 15 and 20 pounds per square inch (psi). The exact operating pressure for airbrush painting will vary, depending on the application and the type of paint used.
3.Reconnect an air-supply hose and a siphon style airbrush to the compressor.
4.Fill the airbrush's paint vile with lacquer-based paints. Test the air brush and paint performance on a piece of cardboard, or scrap piece of cloth
material before beginning the painting project. Every time the air compressor is connected to airbrush, or a new paint color is loaded into the brush, a short test spray should be performed. After each test adjust the air volume, and the paint flow in the gun to achieve the desired results

To fix this problem you need to turn up the pressure both at the wall(coming from the air compressor) and at the gun. I would suggest 10 more psi at the wall and 5 at the guns but you can play areound to find whats best for you.
