The problem is the water inlet valve has failed. Although it is only the
cold water the whole valve needs to be replaced. There are 2 solenoids
on the valve 1 for cold 1 for hot the cold water solenoid has failed.
The reason it works in the softner is it uses a separate solenoid to let
water in there.
I just had the same problem last week Aug 1 2009 on our WFK 2401 purchased in 2001
If you hear no motor spinning when it should then it's something with the motor. If you hear motor spinning, esp spin cycle, but the drum doesn't spin, then probably broken belt ($30 part).
Since I work on cars (this is very much like an alternator+belt) and wanted to avoid a $100 service call (just to come to house) and at least try for a quick fix before buying a new washer, I opened the back, confirmed belt looked ok, so tried replacing the brushes in the motor, and it worked.
For a good description on how to do this see http://dossy.org/2007/05/lots-of-miles-on-our-bosch-wfk2401uc-washer-motor/ I took some pics, and time permitting will post more details to this dossy site to help fellow owners. I purchased the brushes at partstap.com for $50 (incl tax+ship)
Check to see if there is a removable lower plastic cover at bottom front of washer, if there is remove it ,and on the lower right hand side, you should find the pump filter.
Unscrew anti-clockwise, remove and clean.
Please rate my solution.
Thanks.
