Phone says "No connection"

First try dialing 73#. Also try *73. Depending on you phone company, one of those will cancel call forwarding if it was inadvertently set. If that doesn't solve your problem unplug any answering machines or cordless phone base units that have an answering machine built in. Also unplug any fax machines or computers that are connected to the phone line. If this solves the problem you can plug things back in one a t a time and test to see which item is the culprit.

Looks like the basic functions of the phone are correct. Remain the answering machine. Are you sure it can act as an answering machine?
If it can act as answering machine the reason it is not doing so may be the following.

1. Answering function is turned OFF
2. Answering function may be ON but the number of rings before it answers is set too high.

I suggest you try the following
Call you phone. Let it ring at least 10 times. If it can act as an answering machine it will pick up the phone and read the welcome message, because most answering machines (the recent ones at least) answer after 10 rings even if answering function is turned OFF.

The phones that can be answering machines usually do have a display that shows the number of incoming messages, or a LED that flashes to let you know that you have new recorded messages.

I'm not familar with the Vtech but I would suspect that all 4 units work off of the answering machine base. It sounds like it is seeing a dial tone.
Take a working phones like the wall phone, if it is easily removed, and use a known good connecting cable between the good wall phone and the jack that the Vtech is plugged into.
If that works, take the connecting cable loose and replace it with the Vtech connecting cable. If that works check the jack on the Vtech for crossed wire. If non found, connect it to the jack the wall phone was plugged into. If this doesn't provide satisfaction, let me know exactly what you did and what happened and we will go from there.

Most Uniden answering machines will turn on remotely after the 12th ring. Call your home phone and just let it ring, ring, ring.

E4 IS AN ERROR MESSAGE, THE BASE IS NO LONGER GOING TO WORK, POSSIBLY A POWER OUTAGE COULD OF DAMAGED THE BASE.

I've found this to be a problem with regular phone lines (POTS) and Uniden phones. Uniden phones do not seem to support 90v @ 20hz ringing voltage / frequency. They work fine in every aspect except for ringing. These phones do work well with voip, where you aren't connected to the telephone company and have calls routed over the internet. The boxes that handle the voip calls generally produce less than 90v and work well w/ Uniden phones.

I have the very same problem and it was after storing numbers into the directory, although that may not have anything to do with it.

DO YOU HAVE DSL ON YOUR PHONE LINE? IF SO THIS COULD BE THE PROBLEM
