What program do I use to open the backed up files?

What ever program you used to back up the files in the first place.

Did you use windows, or a different program ?

Are they stored on this
Verbatim 500GB USB Desktop 500 GB Hard Drive ?
When you use a program to backup a operating system, the program has the option to restore the system.

If you copied files onto another HDD, then you just copy them back.

You need to post what you used to do this.

It just shows up as drive E. the file path goes green moving slowly across and then my computer crashes. ocasionally it asks me to reformat the drive

Hello,
The information that you have posted only tells me that your external HDD is either broken or got corrupted. Most of the times when I experience this green moving slowly on the address bar, it usually ends up being broken.

Have only just decided to install my new Iomega 500 GB usb 2.0 hard drive and I have mislaid my quick install guide. I have an Apple imac can you help please

Just connect the AC power to the IOMEGA, and the USB cable between the IOMEGA and a USB port on your computer. It is a "plug-and-play" device, and so Apple OS X should automatically recognize it.
