Hi,
I'm having outgoing issues with my external mic. I am running a dell inspiron e1505 laptop with Vista Home Basic (have had it for about 4years). I have attempted several solutions that I have found online for the problem but nothing has worked so far. I have read that there are OS system with vista and external mics, but could not find specifics on that and whether it is true. I am trying to use my external mic through Ventrilo. I can hear but not be hear.
When I go into sound I have 2playback options (Speakers, with a check mark, and Digital Output Device), and 1 Recording option (microphone/line in, with a check mark) all state they are working.
Sound card appears to be a SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC. (I have attempted uninstalling my sound card then reinstalling it, and also attempting to upgrade it, and this is the most updated card at the moment)
This may be lengthy but I'd like to provide as much information as possible.
I attempt to test my mic by going into my control panel > sound > recording >configure > set up microphone.
In this option it allows me to test my mic for speech recognition but it only tells me that it could not hear anything, and to do it again.
The mic i'm using is a Gigaware, and is very basic, there is no mute function on the mic.
If you need any more information I'll do my best to assist you. Thanks for your time.
First, make sure that the external mic is working on another computer.
Then try the steps below:
Right-click the volume icon on the task bar > open volume control > Options > Properties.
Locate the mic volume > check the box > OK
In the master volume properties, the mic column will appear. Make sure that the mute box is not checked.
Thank you and good luck!
1) unplug your external mic
2) open volume control
3) switch it to recording control (menu options/properties/recording)
4) there are few columns (internal mic, external mic, line in ...) each with checkbox at the bottom and one and only one checkbox is with tick
5) after plug-in you will see mic tick moved from iternal to line-in and this is wrong, you need to have tick on external mic. Tick could be set manually but if ext. mic still doesn't work. So solution is to do plug-in of ext. mic very slowly!! Try that and system will move tick to ext. mic when just half of jack is inside that's it, now you can put your jack fully and it should work correctly ...Try this couple of times if this does works for the first time.
if still the same problem then , try the mic with another PC or try any other spare external mic with your system.,this will help you to confirm the fault.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively
.thank you for using fixya

I was not able to completely follow your directions. I was able to open the sound option where I have 3 tab bars (playback, recording, & sounds) Within Playback i have Speakers with a check mark and digital output device. Within recording i have microphone/line in, which has a check mark though I do not have an external mic plugged in. When I plug in the mic there is no change in the check marks.
I do not see any other options for external mics. I attempted to open up the options I have which are configure or properties. When I open up properties I have the ability to open properties from a "controller information". The 3 tabs in this section are General, Levels, and Advanced. None of which seem to have pertinent options.
I have noticed that when I am testing the speech recognition that as I am plugging in the mic i see a sound bar showing that there is some noise/disturbance, but only as I have it plugged in about half way. Even in that position it does not record when i speak.
