How to remove starter from 1983 30hp evinrude OMC

Do you have the serial number of the motor? Reason I ask is twofold. Evinrude started using this model number layout as of 1980. Having said this, something is not making sense with the location of the "N" in your model number. Those last two letters as of 1980 are the year. Here is the chart. Letter on top with corresponding year below it.

So... Example
1980= CS
1990= ES
2000= SS
2010= IS

You have E8RLNR which breaks down as:
E= Evinrude
8= 8hp
R= Rope start tiller steering
L= 20" shaft
N= 2nd year
R= 4th year

I would expect to see the N in the last spot:
1982= CN
1992= EN
etc.

Serial number is another way to identify the year.
This may hep point you in the right direction. Hope it helps.

That is a wide open question. Has it ever run full throttle or is this a new install? Check linkage for full travel. If OK, could be wrong prop, clogged carb, blown cylinder. 1977 was a bad year for OMC pistons. some 78's could have the same problem.Lots more info needed.

Remove the Flywheel nut, Get a steering wheel puller or a harmonic balancer puller that has a pin in the bottom. ( I have both and the official OMC one the OMC is the best) . Get the proper length bolts and make sure they go far enough into the flywheel to engage all the threads but not too far as to damage the coils. Make sure they are screwed in evenly. Then tighten the puller while holding the flywheel ( you can use a screwdriver by the starter or a flywheel holder)and when it feels tight hit the top of the tightening bolt (This is the one in the center of the puller with a hammer. that will "pop" the flywheel. if it doesn't come tighten more and hit it again. The shock of the hammer will pop it off. If you don't shock it, it may not pop off the taper.

Notice the thread length is limited as this is a shoulder bolt made especially for pulling OMC flywheels. That prevents them from screwing in too far and helps keep them even.

It should be 15hp, year 1975.
Driver coil is : 0763810

Tony, that's a problem for the boat motor repair section.

I would try a johnson/ evinrude/ bombardier dealer for the diagram. OMC was bought out by them so they should be able to help. However in the marine industry it can be hard any literature on older products b/c they only produce a limited amount of their products.
