Most printers use the colour cartridge to make black, instead of the black cartridge. When you go to print a black and white document, on the box where you choose the number of pages to print, click properties, and locate the colour settings. There will be two options: Colour/Black and White-with a sub option of high quality or black only. Select Black only. The printer will now only use the black ink.

SOURCE: print quality is lousy

Something has become clogged. It's unlikely to be a driver problem etc... I would make the following suggestion. 1. You can buy ink refill kits (they'll also save you a lot of money). This kit usually includes a flushing fluid. Now with many printers if you change the cartridge, most printing problems go away... however it sounds like the part that hooks into the cartridge has become clogged. Try cleaning this out with the flushing fluid. YOu may be able to buy this fluid without the ink refill that normally comes with it. Not sure. It really does sound like the part that connects the cartridge and feeds the ink has become clogged. So cleaning this out should fix the problem. Some ink jet cartridges have the printer head built in and other don't; it's part of the printer hardware. If your's is part of the printer hardware then you'll need to flush this out with an ink flushing fluid as mentioned above. Basicly this type of problem usually occurs when you don't use the printer for an extended period of time and the ink dries causing a clog. This clog can not always be fixed by the cleaning cycle so you have to use ink flushing fluid. 2. Before doing this contact tech support for your printer. All though it is not in warranty many companies continue to give tech support for hardware products such as printers without additional charge. They may know exactly what the problem is and provide a solution that you can perform without sending it in for repair. If your printer's manufacture does not give tech support beyond the warranty period then tell them you need tech support for the ink cartridge you just bought (even if it's not thier brand, just tell them it is) ... and see what suggestions they give to resolve the problem... otherwise try the above solution. Best of luck. Sincerely, Dean Dean Kenneth Robinson [email protected]

SOURCE: My HP Printer does not

It is possible you're black cartridge is too low on ink & needs replaced. If you're black ink cartridge is new, there could be small ammounts of sticky tape left over the contacts of the ink cartridge. Please clean the ink cartridge's copper contacts (side only, not the bottom of the ink cartridge), with a cotton swab & a little alcohol. Since the ink cartridge is removed clean copper contacts inside the carriage holder as well. Allow time for the alcohol to dry. All most every printer installs software that monitors ink level's. To check you're printer for this. Click the start button, slide up to & click Printers and faxs. The printer and fax window will open. You're default printer will have a little check mark next to it. Right click once on that printer name, another little pop-up window will open, slide to & left click on properties.
You're printer (It's name) will open. Near the bottom click on Printing Preferences. Another window will open. Click the Services tab. Than click Service this device. You should be able to see the ink levels.

Have more questions? Please feel free to ask.
Hope this has helped.
Luck!
Mike

SOURCE: hp 3550 printer color cartridge printing but black not printing

try to clean the black cart :

# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.

1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.

# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer.

I have a pixma 1500 and I need to print black and white prints. I am using edible paper and edible ink. Instead of black and white I am getting pinkish gray instead of gray. I was told before that I...

Apparently, when grayscale printing is selected, some color ink is still used which is why you are getting a pinkish gray color instead of just gray. Here are instructions for solely using the black ink tank.

Print using pigment black ink only (Windows)
Instructions to print using only the pigment black ink tank only. Occasionally you may need to print using black ink only. Using grayscale alone does not provide this option and the color inks will still be used. By following this procedure you may print using only the pigment black ink tank.

Note: Some color ink will still be used for print head maintenance.

Note: Image quality may be sacrificed when printing photographs.

Open the Properties / Preferences window for the printer.

For Windows 7
Click 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, and 'Devices and Printers .'
Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select 'Printing Preferences...' from the menu that appears.

For Windows Vista
Click / Select 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, 'Control Panel', 'Hardware and Sound', and then click on 'Printers'. Note: If you are in 'Classic' view, Click 'Printers' directly from the 'Control Panel'.
Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select 'Printing Preferences...' from the menu that appears.

For Windows XP Home Edition
Click / Select 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, 'Control Panel,' 'Printers and Other Hardware,' and 'Printers and Faxes.'
Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select 'Printing Preferences...' from the menu that appears.

For Windows XP Professional Edition
Click 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, and 'Printers and Faxes.'
Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select 'Printing Preferences...' from the menu that appears.

For Windows 2000/ Me/98 (if applicable)
Click / Select 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, and 'Settings,' then 'Printers.'
Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select 'Properties' from the menu that appears.

Click on the Main tab.

Select 'Plain Paper' as the Media Type. If any other paper type is selected, color ink will be used to create black.

Clean your printer head and nozzle with printer utility software. Hope it would solve your problem, if not, open the black cartridge and fit it again and try to print again. Though, not work, perhaps problem in you black cartridge, so purchase an original cartridge. Thanks.

HP printer not printing true color all of a sudden.

Altho the cartridge is new, you may have used all of the ink of one color. Pictures take an enormous amount of ink to print and all three primary colors are used to create the hues and colors indicated on the picture. Try a new color cartridge and see if that works.

Scanned pictures are printing with different colors

Are the ink cartridges refilled or compatible? They may be defective.
Are they installed correctly (not in the wrong slots)?
** Note that even if they are replaced it will take SEVERAL pages before the quality returns
